Notice to all those who live in Wilmington, NC or can move there in the next few weeks. You can be an extra in Caged Heat! That’s right, you can hang on the set with Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Scarlett Johanssen in this Marvel superhero sequel. Oh right, need to mention: Caged Heat is the working title for Iron Man 3. OLV pointed us to a Facebook page seeking extras to shoot Caged Heat in Wilmington, right where Iron Man 3 will start production in a few weeks. Click the link if you’re interested. Otherwise, hit the jump for a recap of what we know about the sequel.
Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) co-wrote and directed the sequel. Possible plot details leaked last month. Here’s the gist:
- The story may revolve around nanobot technology that can turn regular men into supervillains and Tony Stark into more than just a man in a suit.
- The nanobot idea is supposed to appear in The Avengers, since there is a link between the nanobot technology and the super-soldier serum that turned Steve Rogers into Captain America.
- It was suggested that there will be multiple villains, but no word on which characters might make an appearance.
Iron Man 3 starts shooting in May and will film through the summer. Downey is very optimistic, saying earlier in the year:
“I think that we have an opportunity with the third Iron Man to make the best of the three, and maybe one of the better superhero movies that’s ever been made. But I think we have to remember what made the first one good. It was very character-driven. It was very odd. It was kind of outrageous. And so I think we have to have the courage to trust that the audience is really kind of cool, and smart.”
Iron Man 3 opens on May 3, 2013. Iron Man himself will be seen much sooner when The Avengers drops on May 4, 2012.

50 bucks for 12 hours shoot with no lunch so i can get one shot for a split second? no thanks
Oh, you’ll get lunch. But that split second shot is iffy.
Don’t forget they emotinn Eddie in the first Spider-Man and then pretend like it never happened when 3 rolled around. My prediction, the Mandarain is a type of imported Chinese gin that will lead Tony to battle his biggest enemies: alcoholism and himself. If you think getting a DUI in a car is bad wait til you see him get one in the suit and then barf in the hole Nick Fury’s eye used to be.
As someone whose been in extra in Wilmington a lot it’s not that bad when you have a good crew. I usually get fed twice and make more than $150 each time. And usually not much work at all.
Make it character driven and keep it from being an extended trailer for the next Avengers film (assuming it isn’t a flop like John Carter) like Iron Man 2 was.
My thoughts exactly. The first Iron Man was awesome. Iron Man 2 sucked. I think everyone forgot how crappy the movie was when Scarlet Johansson hypnotized them with her 10th twist flip in a row.
Same here. Iron Man 2 was just an opportunity for Jon Favreau to make himself into the story. He had more appearance time than the main villain.
Tarek you are so right about Jon Favreau. That fat f*** put himself into almost every damn scene. What was that all about? Did he make more money with more screen time?
But yeah, IM2 was sh** on a stick!!!!!!!
Sometimes I think people forget where the “suckage” bar on superhero films is actually set. Yeah, Iron Man 2 paled in comparison to Iron Man, but in the grand scheme of comic book films it’s in the upper half, even if 60% of the film is winks at an Avengers flick.
Remember the truly sucky stuff that’s come before? Elektra? Fantastic Four? Rise of the Silver Surfer? X-Men 3? Spider-man 3 (and Spider-man 1 if you can’t forgive Green Goblin’s power ranger suit)? Wolverine? Superman: Quest for Peace? Batman Forever? Batman & Robin? Green Lantern?
Yeah, Iron Man 2 was disappointing, but only because the hopes were set ridiculously high by how well Favreau and Downey Jr. did in the original. Do you realize how fortunate we are as a filmgoing, comic book-lovin’ generation that we’re getting film adaptations that don’t suck as much as they did 20, 10 or even 5 years ago? Even X2, which has some awesome parts, seems half-baked by comparison to Iron Man or Dark Knight.
It’s a great time to be nerds with expendable income.
I honestly didn’t have too much of a problem with Iron Man 2. Not as good as the first one sure, but it still was better then most superhero movies. But the movie would have been terrible without RDJ.
I agree. The bar was set high with the 1st Iron Man & when Iron man 2 couldn’t reach it I was really disappointed. I guess with Spiderman 2 & the Dark Knight surpassing the 1st movies I just had my hopes up. Iron Man 2, although not a very good movie was still better then almost all the movies you’ve named. Especially the more modern super hero movies like Fantastic 4, Daredevil, X3, Wolverine, and Green Lantern.
You know, I recenty went back & watched Iron Man 2, and I gotta say it worked much better the second time around. It’s still not as awesome as the first Iron Man, but it was a fun continuation of the story & I think it works as its own movie.
Just liked the Facebook page, living in North Carolina is starting to get better & better.
Iron Man 2 was Iron Man 1 part 2. It was almost the same plot. Someone who wants to kill Tony Stark, invents a weapon using the same technology that Iron man uses to get the job done. Iron man uses some kind of blast to kill the villain (EMP in part 1, Tony and Rhodes combine their blasts in part 2), and Sam Jackson shows up in the end. I would like to see an Iron Man movie where he isn’t fighting robots. Big or Nano. Bring on the Mandarin!!!
Totally agree that Iron Man 2 was practically the same story as Iron Man 1. One of my biggest complance about the movie–that and the script sucked. Where was the charm of the first movie? Why is the last scene with the big villain ANOTHER version of the Iron Man technology? Jason Theroux should be scourged for his lack of imagination!
The movie should be about the quest to find Cap a better costume.
Spider-Man is the 4th best comic book movie behind TDK, Iron Man and Spider-Man 2, with Batman Begins rounding out the top 5. Jesus needs to watch Spider-Man again.
