Rumor: Has IRON MAN 3’s Connection to Another Upcoming Marvel Movie Been Revealed?

     January 29, 2013

Ah, we were so close.  With just a few months to go before the release of Marvel’s Iron Man 3, we had managed to stay pretty clear of any major spoilers for the film.  That may or may not have changed, as recent information could have revealed the Shane Black-directed film’s connection to another upcoming Marvel movie.  I’ll keep everything nice and spoiler-free here on the front page, but if you’d like to know more then hit the jump.  Beware, POSSIBLE MAJOR SPOILERS for Iron Man 3 lurk below.  You have been warned.

Again, POSSIBLE MAJOR SPOILERS for Iron Man 3 follow, so turn back now if you’re so inclined.

iron-man-3-robert-downey-jrAs a brief refresher, just this morning we ran the following quote from Robert Downey Jr. regarding a possible cameo from one or more of the Avengers in Iron Man 3:

“But we can’t help it — everywhere you look now in every Marvel movie there are opportunities where certain new pals of [Tony’s] could be useful. So they’re in the atmosphere, so to speak, but I wouldn’t expect to see them on the ground in this one.”

I noted at the time that Downey Jr.’s very careful word choice might be hinting at some sort of galactic presence in Iron Man 3, and it appears that could be the case.  Spurred by the release of an Iron Man 3 toy that boasts Tony’s “Deep Space Suit” armor, the folks over at Latino Review posted the following scoop:

“According to sources, at the end of Iron Man 3, Tony actually does go up into space to hook up with the Guardians of The Galaxy where I also hear he appears at the end of that movie as well.”

I’m not sure if this would be in the film’s post-credits sequence or if it would actually be the end of the movie, but the post-credits sequences of the Phase One films all tied into how the group would come together to form The Avengers, so it only makes sense that the Phase Two tags would involve getting the heroes into outer space since the likely villain in The Avengers 2 is Thanos.

The only thing that gives me pause is the fact that James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy isn’t cast yet, so that makes it kind of hard to film a Guardians scene with RDJ’s Tony Stark.  That said, Joss Whedon and Co. filmed a scene for The Avengers just a few weeks before that film hit theaters, so the precedence is there for a last-minute shoot.  We’ll know for sure when Iron Man 3 hits theaters on May 3rd.

    If this happens I’ll die.

Ok, having the “magical Asgardians” share the same universe as “techno-paragon Stark” is one thing. But having a talking, anthropomorphic Raccoon share the screen with Stark is a completely different level of suspension of disbelief. Not sure if Marvel can pull that one off.

    • Grimcicle

My concern is that people will see an anthropomorphic Raccoon on the post and assume it’s a children’s movie.

if iron man3 is the end of iron man then it is gotta be very boring. in avengers 2 I don’t think so that iron man will come but for sure iron man is one of the avengers .maybe spider-man will come avengers 2 in iron man’s place

    • Doug

Oddly enough, this probably would not be the first time that Robert Downey Jr. has talked with an anthropomorphic Raccoon

Some of the silliness of comics works for comics. When it comes to film, not so much. If Marvel is going to stumble, it’s in trying to bring comic sensibilities like talking racoons into the cinematic world. That is likely to alienate mainstream viewers like myself who just want a good film, not a complete mining of comic lore.

      • James

I agree. I’m most worried about this film. As much as I love the characters, for the movie’s sake I was hoping they would take Rocket and Groot out of it and replace them with Warlock. That way it would keep the character humanoid and add even more of a tie-in with Thanos.

  • Griz

If true, this end credits scene would come off as more tagged-on than Stark’s inclusion at the end of Incredible Hulk. . . . . Never-mind he was there recruiting for a team he wasn’t even a part of.

  • Strong Enough

this movie is going to be huge. but not as big as MOS

  • Cam

Jarvis says in the first movie “Perhaps, if you intend to visit other planets, we should improve the exosystems.” It looks like Tony will take his advice.

  • Tom

i love how people look at toys and assume they’re actually from the movie. my little cousin has a lego set from the Avengers of “Captain America’s Motorcycle” and we all know Cap never had a motorcycle (not counting the end. that’s Steve Rogers’ motorcycle). but even if the deep space suit is actually used, wouldn’t it make more sense that he would go to Asgard or something? starting with IM2, the cameos after the credits teased the NEXT movie coming out, which is of course Thor 2. maybe Tony helps rebuild the rainbow bridge or something, setting up Thor and Loki traveling to other worlds in their next movie

  • LEM

The rumor is that Jon Benjamin will voice the raccoon.

Funny thing is I’m not worried about rocket raccoon, I’m more worried about seeing falcon in the winter soldier movie on he big screen looking horrible. How are they going to pull that one off….. No matter what design of costume they choose to make it’s going to look corny on screen.

    • Mitch

The whole flippin movie is corny. I love the marvel universe but this is one comic they should have just ignored or at the very least left out of the now established Marvel movie Universe. This has Star Wars Episode 1 type flop written all over it.

  • Darkness

Don’t worry about rocket raccoon. Be more concerned about falcon looking dumb as hell in the winter soldier. No matter how hard they try, when you visualize falcon flying in that corny costume whether it be original or ultimates it will look ridiculous. Their are other things to worry about besides rocket. Just saying.
