Jon Favreau Plans to Have The Mandarin as the Villain of IRON MAN 3

by Matt Goldberg    Posted:May 9th, 2010 at 10:33 pm

Director Jon Favreau is already looking ahead to Iron Man 3 even though he admits he has no idea what it will look like until after the events of Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, and The Avengers.  However, he told MTV that he would still like to have Iron Man’s arch-nemesis The Mandarin be the film’s villain.  For those unfamiliar with the character, he’s a Fu-Manchu-looking Asian caricature who possesses ten magical rings.  Favreau admits that the character from the comics will require some alterations, but he’s been setting up Mandarin’s presence in the last two films.  The terrorist organization in the first Iron Man is part of the “Ten Rings” and if you look through the credits of Iron Man 2, you’ll see Ali Khan credited as “10 Rings Gangster” (he’s the one who hands Vanko the forged ID and travel documents).

I like that Favreau’s willing to say “I don’t know” at this point and it should now be clear that he’s taking the time to make Cowboys and Aliens (which comes out next summer) so that the Marvel Universe can simmer before jumping into a third Iron Man movie without knowing how Tony Stark is going to fare during and after The Avengers.  Hit the jump to check out MTV’s interview and a brief bio for The Mandarin.

Here’s The Mandarin’s brief bio [via Marvel]:

Born circa 1920, the future Mandarin was raised by his embittered aunt following his parents’ deaths, and as an adult he used his brilliance and family wealth to attain prominence in the Kuomintang Party’s reign over China. The Communist Revolution of 1949 cost him his position and power, although the population he had once commanded still regarded him with nigh-mystic awe. After years of seeking some means of regaining greatness, he ventured into the mysterious Valley of Spirits, where he discovered the millennia-old wreckage of a starship of the reptilian Kakaranatharian, or Makluan, extraterrestrial race, and the ten mighty rings which had powered the vessel. Unaware that the Makluans themselves remained at large, posing as humans, the Mandarin spent decades mastering Makluan technology, then several years more conquering the valley’s adjacent villages and establishing a network both of citadels and of loyal followers such as Po, Yu, and Li Fong. His long-range goal was to conquer China, and then the world, which he claimed he would rule with the “wisdom and harmony” of his nobleman ancestors. During these years he fathered a son, Temujin, whom he sequestered in a remote monastery, and took the girl later known as Madam Macabre  as a student; another girl, Mei-Ling, became betrothed to marry him in adulthood. He also discovered the dormant alien  robot Ultimo  within a volcano, and worked for years to revive him using a combination of science and magic.

The Asgardians are aliens cuz they r not from earth…. All Gods are “aliens”. None originated from here. They r simply advance beings over us, which is why we would call them gods in the first place. Nitro Muscle Mass Review

“you’ll see Ali Khan credited as “10 Rings Gangster”

Lol does that even count? I figured they'd at least mention him or the rings in the movie like they did in the first.

If they alter Mandarin a little, make his rings powersources not just magic it could be cool. Maybe alter his name to Satsuma ?

I just hope Favrou reads comments from IM2 to see what audiences hated etc
I still havnt seen it yet, but what ive read is a lil offputting so may wait for the small screen. But the part that disturbs me from what people say is not enough action and fight scenes being too short. Thats what i hated about the end fight in IM1, I was hoping he woulda learned from that.

  4. whatever @

I too hope Favreau pays attention to viewer reaction. IM2 is going to make a mint, but I don't think it is going to have a lasting fan base. I was disappointed. It had some splendid elements and great moments, but overall it was a mess.
Also, the Mandarin sounds like like a bad way to go. Magical rings v. high tech weapons suit sounds like robocop meets big trouble in little china.

  5. OrbitalGun @

Robocop vs. Big Trouble in Little China? Was that supposed to be a bad thing, because that sounds like the greatest movie ever made.

  6. Lt. Ripley @

Favs don't pay attention to what anybody says about quality. IM2 was not a mess. And it was certainly no worse than the first one which was pretty flawed itself. Both movies seemed to work despite their flaws which is the sign of great filmmaking. Keep it up.

  7. piratey @

If John Carpenter does the soundtrack with his synthesizer, we might be talking about the greatest movie ever made.

  8. lt. ripley is a fag @

Lt. Ripley – You are a fag for thinking IM 2 works as a movie. Its such a mess.

  9. brian @

in current continuity the rings are alien technology. if favs would get his head out of his ass he'd realize it. and like asttlenesh said, yeah the asgardians are aliens. it's really not much of a stretch to make all of this work and to “lt. ripley is a fag” first of all nice choice of words. what are you 8? also, iron man 2 dragged a bit in the middle but it was action packed and fun. that's the idea. you want academy award stuff then you're the idiot for looking for it in this film.

  10. tbone @

you ain't lying. To the uninitiated IM2 seems like a hit but for some of us IM2 was shit on a stick. Why the hell did John Favreau put himself in so many scenes? The movie was trite and flawed to the max. Mickey Rourke looked older than his dying father. And how the hell did he make all that whiplash stuff in a dingy basement? And he also made a flying iron man suit that he flew. What, because he was tersely commented as being a physicist that gave him wings? LOL!
The movie was pimped overseas to cash in quick on that trash and then did its thing state side so the studios could claim a fat weekend. Even though IM2 was released over a week ago overseas. I hated the movie!
And watch how they show Stark making a new element by just shining a powerful laser on a pice of stuff. WHAT A TOTAL LET DOWN.
The movie was made to work even if it contradicted itself like a mother****** in the process. Hollywood at its most desperate!

      Uhhh Happy Hogan?!

There is no chance, not one hope in hell that any Iron Man movie that ever came out would have satisfied you, so believe me when I say that they didn’t give a rats ass about people like you when they made this awesome movie. Honestly, they didn’t tie up every single menial, unimportant, redundant loose end (for the likes of you) because they assumed that their audience, at least the one they gave a damn about, had at least a shred of imagination.

tbone, Favreau was cast as a comic side-kick, so to speak. His character not so important, but filler as needed whimsical humor. You can't help Mickey Rourke and his age, Keith Richards, (The Rolling Stones) looked liked he was 60, when he was actually 30 years old, when he was in his prime, and yet he still rocks hard. Not relevant though, but what is relevant is Ivan is a genius scientist/inventor like Stark, but he and his dad got caught cheating. Ivan didn't create flying armor, he borrowed the technology and added his own brilliance, which basically was to double cross Hammer, and get revenge on Stark, but unfortunately, Tony was too quick. Sorry that plot ruined the day and the action you saw was not enough. I loved the movie, as it came to be.

  12. Brian @

IM2 was great fun, and don't get why some people were so disappointed. The points I hear, like Mickey looking too old, not enough action, messy plot, are symptomatic of many, many films. None of those things are true at all. The problems it has are not the ones being mentioned. I think anyone disappointed by IM2 needs to seriously get a life and enjoy a movie like Iron Man for what it is, an action packed thrill ride with smarts.

  13. peten @

It sure would be nice to see Stark go up against a serious enemy. Rather than in the first two films, if you will, a 'frenemy'.

  14. basil33 @

    @tbone

It was opened overseas a week earlier to avoid starting too close to the world cup and losing butts in the seats you freaking dumbass.

  15. MicHaeL @

Hm, it was clear that of course 'Iron Man', the films at least, are more “realism”-based.
And I really hope it will stick to that and they DON'T introduce “magic”.
I've been worried about film about characters like Thor ever since I heard they were going to focus on them.
I really don't feel good about it and… I don't even have any interest in such “minor” characters.
I mean, really, people don't really know these characters, there are more characters that are more up-front in the comic-universe and also a bit more well-known, PLUS more plausible for the films.

But yeah, we'll see what happens…

  16. alex @

all of you sound like idiots and probably know nothing about comic books.

  17. jhbowden @

Who would play Mandarin? He's half European, half Oriental. The only dude that comes to my mind is Keanu Reeves. But who are we kidding?

  18. Ricky @

though it was an action packed thrill ride, what may would argue is that it lacked the “smarts” of the first film. when rourke's character was locked up and sent to siberia, computers were the size of rooms… how was he able to figure out how to hack into hammer's complex system in just 5 minutes?

I feel JOHN did a grt job in bringing two iron man movies,Robert Downey Jr looks simply superb in IRON MAN,he is my best action hero of all time,Amazing what all hard work they put in 2 make such a success.Thr 1st part shows tony a spoilt child but in captivity he realizes true human value and then unleashes his potential to fight crime and injustice.I always like the dialogue from dying cave assistant “Dont waste ur life” let us all take us a memory of that and become better humans.
the 1st movie was a lot better, second movie dissapointed a bit as tony switches to alcohol and disgrace, releaving a human side in all of us,MICKEY looked grt in WHIPLASH role but I think DON CHEADLE didnt looked that good in WAR machine ,JOHN FAVREAU should have stuck with TERRANCE HOWARD but they had some money dispute,,I have a good idea if some one can communicate to JOHN that IRON MAN 3 can be a part of AVENGERS mission as THOR,SPIDERMAN and HAWK can be there with NICK FURY along with TONY to battle MANDARIN(arnold can take that role) with Hypnotia(sienna miller preffered) and GREY GARGOYLE(DENNIS QUAID can be that) to save world from evil and selfish motive of MANDARIN.

  20. cruzaderjc @

They could probably just get ken Watanabe to do it. He's the default for Asian villains in Hollywood anyway. Keaunu Reeves WOULD be interesting though.

  21. Ducksda @

    UNDERTAKER should play Mandarin!!!!!

  22. Mblake1053 @

    Wow. Shut up.

  23. Gamin_gamin @

The movie was good, although there could be some improvements like fighting scenes… The main villain not being defeated in 10seconds literally lol. And Scenes not being changed in the movie, that were shown in the previews x+X whats up with that X_?

  24. hollylea @

love the movies they should not change one bit and if you dont agree your losers

No magic please. Stick to “alien” technology, but Iron Man's appeal is its basis in reality, not in mysticism. The villain may consider it magic, because he did not create the technology or power and does not understand how it was originated, but the heroic nature of Iron Man is that he DOES understand reality and to such an extent he creates his super power. Mandarin would be the evil twisting another's genius of technology to his whim. That I can understand. Magic is a cop-out and a turn-off.

  26. Scorpio @

Why not have the Mandarin use Ninja techniques (Such as smoke and other tricks) to make him seem magical. The rings could each be an adaption of the Arc Reactor however they each do different things. 10 Arc Reactor rings would certainly give him more powers than Ironman.

I don’t understand why people make a big fuss out of a great movie..if it’s rebooted and is worse than before, i bet people will regret being remade. If it’s better than before, well…then u people got your wish. But how much more does a logical plot and storyline that’s based on realism can get to satisfy ironman fans and the people, other than the 2 ironman movies made now? I say it’s half and half of ironman fans, and the people, that likes and dislike the movies. As for ironman 3, i hope that Fav can make a realism storyline and plot for Mandarin throughout Ironman 3.

I hate it when people are so closed minded…especially about movies-and they post all the movie flaws in the movies on youtube and talk of pointless, uncommon sense ideas in them. It ruins the mood of watching a great movie! Movies are for you entertainment not for your dissatisfaction!!!

  30. Guest @

If he does use The Mandarin for the next Ironman, please do away with the walking cardboard stereotypes of Asians that have plagued Hollywood for decades.
No need for the mystical evil fu-manchu sporting Asian wizard guy, with the harem of Asian dragon ladies and geishas, no need for the evil Asian guy who craves white women, and so on.
And, please, just make him a well-rounded character, at least as “human” as the other characters in the movie, and, most importantly, just have a guy of Asian descent play him, and don’t dance around the issue of yellowface, playing blissfully ignorant while millions of ignorant fans out there roll out the old, ignorant and uneducated defenses of racist casting — the likes of which were seen in defense of the Last Airbender’s whitewashed casting.
If “Asians” don’t sell to American audiences, then DON’T have an Asian villain.
