While Iron Man 3 is currently set for a May 3, 2013 release date, that doesn’t mean that anyone knows what the film will actually be about, including director Jon Favreau. The Cowboys & Aliens director says that the plot of Iron Man 3 will be contingent upon what happens in the other Marvel films that will be released before it. Favreau had this to say about it:
“In theory, ‘Iron Man 3′ is going to be a sequel or continuation of ‘Thor,’ ‘Hulk,’ ‘Captain America’ and ‘Avengers,’ This whole world… I have no idea what it is. I don’t think they do either, from conversations I’ve had with those guys.”
While this isn’t exactly old news (Favreau said as much back in May, when he also stated his desire to have the Mandarin be the villain in the next Iron Man film), the director told MTV News that he wouldn’t even be able to guess what the third film in the Iron Man franchise would be about, because so little is known about the other upcoming Marvel films until they’re actually finished and released. For more from Favreau, hit the jump.
The fluidity of the filmmaking over at Marvel makes knowing how a film is going to turn out before it’s finished very difficult. “The script is one thing,” Favreau said, “but when you actually see what you land on at the editing room — especially with Marvel where they film, cut, film some more and shape the film — you really learn as you go.” Favreau did have a chance to give some words of wisdom to the directors that are continuing the Marvel film universe while he’s off doing other films:
“I’ve talked to ['Thor' director] Kenneth Branagh. I’ve met the cast members. I had a conversation with ['Avengers' director Joss Whedon] in passing, giving him my two cents about the film.”
Although it’s assumed that all of the principle actors from the previous two Iron Man films have options to appear in subsequent flicks, it’s not known for sure if Favreau will be returning to the director’s chair. He had some not-so-private issues with Marvel over the second film, with rumors going so far as suggesting that Marvel was looking to hire a different director to helm the sequel for less money. I hope Marvel has enough respect for Favreau as a filmmaker to ensure that he continues to spearhead the Iron Man franchise. He’s basically the one who jump-started the entire Marvel movie-making machine with his phenomenal success on the first Iron Man.

Marvel exec’s are just a bunch of jerkoffs looking to make lots of money and pay out the people that bring there visions to life the bare minimum. Iron Man 2 showed it and for all we know every other film of theres in production at the moment could as well. But that’s what happens when you put cash before creativity, funny…I always thought that when you make a good movie on the creative scale it pays out anyway. Guess making shit movies is way more profitable though.
I don’t think Iron Man 2 was a complete disaster. I wouldn’t even go so far to say it was a bad movie. Iron Man 2 just felt rushed and a tad uninspired with, yet, another lame climax. Despite its flaws, it was a decent, fun movie and hopefully these new Marvel newbies will be more creative than we would expect and prompt Jon Favreau to make a better Iron Man 3. I think the fluidity within the whole Marvel Universe is interesting as it hasn’t been done before. It would certainly be nice to see DC/Warner Bros. do the same thing (although Christopher Nolan wouldn’t be too keen on that idea.)
I agree with the final sentiment of this article, in that Jon Favreau really deserves major props for his contribution to this whole Marvel film universe. He should direct Iron Man 3, no questions asked.
My only concern is this: what if Thor, Captain America, and The Avengers all suck? I wouldn’t want Iron Man 3 to be based around that. From the images I’ve seen from Thor and Captain America online and in magazines, they look like crap. And the Iron Man movies have actually been good. Maybe Favreau should just stick to his own guns? I don’t know.
Obviously the main concern is how the Mandarin is handled in Iron Man 3 because for reasons that are 100% understandable, that villain is a more supernatural villain than the others and thus doesn’t exactly fit into that universe. The final product of Thor will be the real test to see if they can squeeze the supernatural elements into the more technology-oriented Iron Man. And the Mandarin has to be a threat to the entire world, not just Iron Man like Iron Monger and Whiplash were. That creates a greater sense of danger.
yeah, erm….the Marvel universe is a bizarre patchwork of fantasy and sci-fi where magic and technology co-exist and there’s no attempt to have it all make sense. Its a ludicrously delirious universe, and it needs to be handles with a touch of humor (Stan understands this best).
As we get closer to the Avengers movies these filmakers are starting to realize that they are trying to combine….hmm….a guy in a robot suit, a norse GOD (yes, a GOD, think about that), a dude that throws, um.. a shield, and a green monster, and somehow have it all feel “realistic” and not silly at all (god forbid you make something campy).
good luck guys.
I agree…
“Maybe Favreau should just stick to his own guns? I don’t know.”
He may do just that ‘Gilpin’. If THOR, CAPTAIN AMERICA, and THE AVENGERS are successful, he’ll go from there with IM3… BUT, if they are unsuccessful, he’ll probably give IM3 it’s own continuation/plot from IM2, that would leave out many references from THOR, C.A., and THE AVENGERS, so that IM3 can stand on it’s own.
An Avengers movie can’t suck when Joss Whedon is in charge. Thor looks risky, and yes, it’s a potential disaster, but many times in comic books an awful story arc has been followed by an amazing one that takes from the previous plot. So I’m not really worried.
The trailer for Thor, in my humble opinion, didn’t look like crap. It looked well-handled.
My problem is just Captain America. Joe Johnston could potentially screw this up beyond expectations. Like. League of Extraordinary Gentlemen type of screwup.
What would happen to the avengers, then? They start filming BEFORE Cap is ever released. And if Thor sucks as well, the avengers can’t exactly reboot itself…
why has everyone overlook the obvious remake
why not a Justice League movie to or what would
be cool would be Teen Titans movie a live action
version that is .rkallao .Wonder Girl Cyborg and
The Changeling Storm and Robin and my personal
favorite Raven that would to use an old pun dynamite .
And why not a movie about the overlook character of
all time in my book, Deadman he would be the coolest
to see a live action movie done…………………………..
i read about this yesterday but thnx
Lets hope Iron Man 3 is more like 1 and not like 2.
Perhaps we can stay closer to the storyline in the cmic. Tony is an alcoholic and full of angst. Please devote additional time to character development and stick with one villan as opposed to divising time between two or three.
