Over the course of Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and The Avengers, we’ve seen Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) go through seven different Iron Man armors. The Iron Man 3 footage we saw at Comic-Con had Tony testing a new armor that he could summon piece-by-piece (with varying levels of difficulty). We’ve seen a glimpse at a new armor that inverts the red-gold color scheme, and we assumed this was the Mark VIII armor. Turns out, we may have been off by XXXIX.

According to Latino Review, The Mandarin’s (Kingsley) Extremis bad guys are going to be too powerful for a mano-y-mano fight, so Tony (as is his way) changes the game. Before going out to the fight, he mentions the Mark XLVII to Pepper (Paltrow), and she asks what happens to the other marks in between, “and Tony just smiles.”
The Mark XLVII allows Tony to control other armors in battle, so he would basically have drones on his side to fight against the Extremis boys. I guess even though Vanko (Mickey Rourke) was a bad guy, it doesn’t mean his desire to create drones was a bad idea.
