Another character poster has been released for Iron Man 3.  This time, Marvel is showing off the film’s villain, the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley).  In the comics, The Mandarin is Iron Man’s arch-nemesis, and while Kingsley’s voice over was suitably menacing in the teaser trailer, I can’t help but chuckle a bit when I see this poster.  I buy Ben Kingsley as menacing, but his pose here is just a little too goofy.  On the bright side, at least there aren’t sparks and embers coming out of nowhere.

Hit the jump to check out the poster.  The film also stars Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, James Badge Dale, Rebecca Hall, and Guy PearceIron Man 3 opens in 3D on May 3rd.

  1. It is goofy, but I kinda dig it. Isn’t the Mandarin a magician in the comics? I don’t know what they’re doing with him to update/de-cheese him, but I kinda like it.

  2. I thought he looked stupid in the first trailer. It’s worse than I feared. Clearly trying to combine Bane and Kim Jong-Il. Ben Kingsley was an inspired choice. But please fire your costume designer.

  3. I’m pretty sure this poster is supposed to be goofy. I think it’s fantastic. Finally something that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

  4. The body language is terrible. Where are the power rings? Keep the actor and the background. And get a new costume. This is IRON-MAN not Batman.

  5. JandS already said what I was thinking-looks like Stan Lee.
Anyway, I don’t know how to take this. It does look like a rapper posing for Rolling Stone. Anyway, the trailer was solid, I liked the voice Kingsley went with, I’m not too worried.

  6. Its clearly a ‘Mandarin takes the piss outta Stark after he thinks he’s killed him’-type of pose imo. Supporting his head on his finger, the sunglasses, the chilled slouch, all remind me of Stark/RDj.
There are what appear to be dog tags and possibly UN army helmets in the right side of the background too, as well as the IM helmet underfoot on the uncropped image…
    Cant wait! :)

  7. Another thing to remember when you’re worried about the casting/appearence of a villain is who’s at the helm. Shane Black wrote all four Lethal Weapon movies and gave us one of the best comedies in recent memory-Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. The dude writes cool, there’s no other way to put it. I’m confident, at least for now, that he would have made the right choices as far as this villain is concerned. It’s like when The Dark Knight was filming and everyone started questioning Heath Ledger as the Joker. I myself was thinking, “You know Christopher Nolan is making this right? The dude behind Batman Begins and The Prestige. Don’t question it.” And sure enough, Ledger was one of the best bad guys on screen we’ve ever gotten. Same thing for Anne Hathaway in TDKR. People questioned it, then she was awesome. When you’ve got a talented/reliable filmmaker in the chair, don’t question it until you see it.
