IRON MAN 3 Set for May 3, 2013

by     Posted 4 years, 13 days ago

Walt Disney Pictures has set the release date for Iron Man 3 for May 3, 2013.  This news from Exhibitor Relations’ Facebook page comes on the heels of a press release from Disney announcing that they had purchased the distribution rights for Iron Man 3 and The Avengers from Paramount.  It’s worth noting that if this release date holds, Iron Man 3 would come out almost one year after The Avengers, which is slated for May 4, 2012.

Nothing is set in stone at the moment, but presumably all the actors who signed on for Iron Man 2, signed multi-picture deals so Marvel and Disney can choose who they want to bring back.  The biggest question mark is whether or not Jon Favreau will helm the third film.  As you may recall, there was some protracted negotiations between the director and Marvel over coming back for the sequel.  However, Favreau has already said that if he returns, he would like The Mandarin to be Iron Man 3′s villain.

Jon Favreau can be hit or miss I wouldn’t care if he did this one…I say let Kevin Smith try it!

BUT if they replaced RDJ it’d be a no go!

  • Stanley

I hope Jon favreau does it, I think he would make the film a success and I would really love to see The Mandarin as the villain.
I don’t think they would just switch directors for the hell of it when it will probably be the last one.

  • Jackson

They’ll get Favreau back. Money was the point of the negotiations last time, but now with Disney that won’t be an issue.

They better have some serious hand-to-hand action. All that flying around crap made for a weak finale in #2.

Marvel’s miserliness is legendary. I think they expect Jon Favreau will direct Iron Man 3 for free…

  • poopnoop

Marvel better not drop Favreau for the 3rd film.

Another question I’ve had about the Marvel films is, will all the films after The Avengers still be in continuity? It’d be brilliant if it was but it’d also be extremely hard to do.

    • guesty

Yes, Marvel intends on expanding the “Marvel Cinematic Universe” well beyond The Avengers to lesser superheroes too. They say The Avengers isn’t the bigger picture, it’s the MCU that is. The Avengers is only the start of a new franchise, which is just exciting as hell.

      • poopnoop

Yes!! This will be awesome then. With Disney backing up Marvel, I hope they can buy back the rights to the X-men, Daredevil, and Fantastic Four. If they can, then I want to see how those universes tie all together!!!

can’t Favreau hire an action director for his second unit so he can nail the action this time.

i don’t know about you folks, but there was talk before of Favreau shooting scenes on IMAX. but seeing thos action scene on Ironman 2, there is no worthy of IMAX camera scenes. IRONMAN movies are at his best when Downey is not in the suit. where he is just Downey, being Downey. that’s why the comedy scenes worked on IRONMAN 2. a good script from a comedy writer, and Downey in full control.

plus, have a atleast a good villian. Mickey Rourke was bad in IM2. and Rockwell, who was never bad in anything, was also bad in IM2

    • Cameron

Rourke, Downey Jr and Rockwell were the best actors and the best parts of Iron Man 2. I wanted more Whiplash and less of Samuel Jackson and the other parts. Palthrow’s part was much better in the first Iron Man. THe best action scene was between Stark and Whiplash.

I liked the set ups for The Avengers, but other then that I found Iron Man 2 to be a disappointment. Hope the next one’s better.

Whatever they decide, they need to replace the person who’s trying to make all of Iron Man’s villains use Iron Man suits. If he’s aboard, the Mandarin will use Stark technology and Iron Man will fight a dude in big Iron Man suit…. again.

    • Rsparman

Favreau said he wanted the films to be as close to reality as he can get it. He said the technology in the movie is just beyond possible. The Mandarin’s 10 magic alien rings wont fit in there so he said they might be techbased. But almost all of Iron Man’s villains are tech-based. In IM2 they combined Whiplash with the Crimson Dynamo for the final battle, thus the Russian background.

but Favreau said that it might all changed when the Avengers comes us. Avengers will introduce this supernatural element in the Ironman universe because Thor will exist in the same universe as IRONMAN. which would make it possible for introducing villains that might not work before but will work now.

ps. am i the only one who thinks this “same universe” thing is a bad move. how can a new director bring a fresh take on a superhero if he’s playing by this rules of the “Marvel movie universe”. i mean, Edgar Wright still wants to do ANTMAN. can he still do his super cool-thoroughly unique style of film making(Ala the freedom in Scott Pilgrim) if he’s playing by the rules of the “Marvel Movie Universe”?

My first thought – please have him fight something/someone that isn’t just a knockoff of himself – PLEASE!

  • Sdcard4ever

I agree with the same universe setting. THOR will work great in its mythological space. That story is based on Norse myth, just like Greek myths with Zeus, Titans, Hercules. Taking Thor into Iron Man world will be akin to taking Perseus (Sam Worthington character in CLASH OF TITANS) to, say, Batman universe. Batman itself is quite ridiculous in its realistic setting. Would you suspend your disbelief when Batman is fighting a giant scorpion up there on the giant screen?

    • The.Watcher

“Batman is fighting a giant scorpion”

YES!! I’d so pay to see that in 3D for 2 hours.

    • B-Flash

Watch the THOR trailer and listen to what he says. “Your ancestors called it magic and you call it science….I come from a place where there one in the same.” same universe can work if done right, also I think there going down the Ultimate Thor route where everyone thinks he’s crazy because also in the trailer “You know for a crazy homeless person, he’s pretty cut”.

Iron Man’s suit? Hmm…he’ll most likely get a new one (possibly Hulkbuster) in the Avengers movie, and then in Iron Man 3…it would be pretty flipping sweet to see Extremis in movie form.

Iron Man 2 wasn’t as good as it could have been because Marvel wanted to control everything Jon Favreau did. He said he would have done alot of things different if he had more control like Iron Man. If they give him more room i think it will be a good movie.

At least whomever is making has sometime to make a better story, Iron Man 2, good not great. As for who’s helming, no one except for Jon Favreau, he’s made the series what it is, even Christopher Nolan wouldn’t fit in the directors chair. I’d love to see the movie version of the Mandarin, just as long as it isn’t overtop or too grounded, in the middle somewhere. I Don’t really mind the action the way it is, its BADASS!

  • Jr

Cop Out sucked ass and Kevin Smith built his career on Jay.
Iron Man 2 was really bad. I feel like they changed the semi
realistic tone of the first one and made IM2 more thoughtless
bubblegum which seems like the tone they are going for in the
Avengers. Can’t say I’m too enthusiastic about all the overkill
with Superhero movies these days. Looking forward to Batman 3,
and hopefully they can fix Superman. Aronofsky taking over
Wolverine will also right that ship. Origins was a joke and actually
reminded me of the tone set in Iron Man 2 & X-men 3.

  • Psinex

Whoopity f’in doo. Ironman 2 was so disappointing, I think I’ll pass on a third one.

  • brittany

wow such words i think Iron Man is such a hit in all he does no matter who directs and Robert Downy Jr. does such a good job playing the part
even with playing the part of Sherlock Holms =) and Marvel does a great job as well never seen a better job ..
