After the worldwide success of Joss Whedon‘s The Avengers, writer-director Shane Black stepped into an almost unwinnable situation helming Iron Man 3.  While he would have Marvel’s biggest star, Robert Downey Jr., he wouldn’t be able to call on the rest of the Marvel universe for help, and fan expectations for the third installment were sky high.  But even though the cards were stacked against him, I’m happy to report that Iron Man 3 is a rousing success.  Not only is Black’s script fantastic and laugh out loud funny, he’s also crafted some amazing action set pieces and created a villain that everyone will be talking about.  Continued after the jump.

Before you think I’m giving Iron Man 3 an A+, I’m not.

Unfortunately, I have a few nitpicks that bother me, and if they’d been addressed, Iron Man 3 would be close to perfect.  Since this article is going to be spoiler free I can’t really get into them.  At some point down the road I’ll post my issues, and I really think you’re going to agree with what I have to say.  I also think that when you see the movie for yourself, you’ll find the same issues on your own.

After seeing the film, I recorded a video blog with Peter from /Film where we talked about what we thought, what’s great about the film, our issues, and a lot more.  If you’ve seen the trailers, it’s definitely safe to watch.

Finally, Iron Man 3 has some great twists and turns.  I strongly advise you to not read any reviews until you’ve seen the movie for yourself.

    Peter’s interruptions. LOL

I like when Peter interrupts Steve, it breaks it up a bit more, gives it a more back and fourth

  • Someone

Meh….It’ll probably be aight. Nothing groundbreaking.

I’m still going to see this because I’m always curious how special effects are progressing in Hollywood, but Marvel’s films lack the luster and excitement for me that they used to have. They’ve oversaturated the market with their shiny franchise fluff and made new films coming out each year feel like an inevitable chore, rather than something worth anticipating.

While it’s definitely good to be interested in technological innovations in Hollywood and mainstream filmmaking, I really do hope that’s not the only thing you look for…like a good story or emotional characters, or cinematographic art, or even a good script? :)

    that’s your opinion,clay

    • Clay

      Well…..yeah.

  • Shane!

Ha very nice. I was holding back for a while wondering what ya guys would think of the final product. Saw Rachel’s quick review too and glad it was atleast overall enjoyed by some true nerds (like myself!)

  • Smelly fish fingers

Went to see it at 00.01 this morning and its pretty good, I agree with your points and some bits I didnt like and didn’t make sense. Something will be invincible one min and then destroyed easy then next for example but over all thought it was pretty good…theres somd great tony stark one liners.
    I wont say anymore

@Steve ‘Frosty’ Weintraub Did you guys stay for the after credits scene?

  • spartacus

i think i’m the only one that left the cinema after watching this movie really disappointed..i can say i almost hated it…the one liners where good..but there was one thing i was really looking forward to in this movie which was the mandarin..and i wont say anything more cause i dont want to spoil it for anyone.

  • Chriz Nolan Die Hack Fraud

Awesome! It sounds like they finally stopped catering to fanboys who want everyone to take comic books uber serious, lol. Hopefully after man of steel tanks this awful trend of dark superhero material will end.

  • hg

    thanks for ruining mandarin marvel

  • Chriz Nolan Die Hack Fraud

Also, does anybody know if there is a Chris Nolan impersonator that i can hire to come to my house, gather my family in the living room, drop his pants and start pissing in my open mouth while yelling “ACTION”? I’d REALLY like that . . . in fact, i’m pretty sure that it will be the greatest birthday ever. I’m willing to offer $300, cash. $350 if he can make it taste like asparagus.

    • lame material

I know you probably spent a week perfecting this same insult you use ad nauseam but, please, try some new material. You’re more of a trite hack than even Nolan at this point.

  • spongefist

Unfortunately, it’s just not very good, saw it Wednesday night. Extremis is just a big confused mess, with the bad guys being bad for no reason, with stupid ‘powers’.

Some funny bits for sure, amazing CGI – Pepper Potts the best bit.

Villains ruined it. Iron man 2 far better. Avengers in a different league.

    • Guy Smiley

IM2 was awful… I haven’t seen 3 yet, but there’s almost no way it could be worse than 2 was.

  • ConradtheGreat

Spoiler free my ass. Will someone plz tell Peter of Slashfilm to shut the help up to one minute.

    Saw this movie – UK.
I’ll keep it short and simple.

Lots of action here and there, but no substance.
Such a missed opportunity. I would say it is at least better than Iron Man 2.

    • BlimpieBoy

Saw it at the BFI IMAX in the UK today and thought the exact opposite. The big action sequences bookend the film but don’t dominate by any means, and the character of Stark is probably given the best workout here of all three films. The clearly wanted to get as much facetime out of RDJ as they could given the fees!

The sheer amount and quality of humour in it really surprised me in a good way, despite knowing Black’s track record. The trailers and posters have made it seem way too Dark Knight Rises gloomy. Trust me, it’s not. There’s laughs in there every bit as big as The Avengers’, moreso if anything. Even a couple of otherwise cliched henchmen get a couple of nice gags. And Croydon gets a shoutout! A friend at work is seeing it in Croydon tonight, that one’ll bring the roof down. First they film some of Dark Knight Rises there and now this!

Didn’t think it was perfect by any means and wouldn’t go into detail as no desire to spoil, but all the twists and turns really worked for me. Shame Shane couldn’t have done the second film as well really.
