Last month we learned that Shane Black (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang) had been hired to direct Iron Man 3. However, Marvel “hadn’t figured out” if Black would also write the script. Now it looks like they’ve solved that problem and come to the correct answer: Black will direct and write Iron Man 3. Black, whose previous screenplays include Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, confirmed he would write Iron Man 3‘s screenplay to an audience at the Omaha Film Festival. He also revealed other interesting aspects about the film, which you can find out after the jump.
Audience member “Krullboy” tells AICN:
The studio was not happy with the direction Iron Man 2 took. Iron Man 3 will not be another “two men in iron suits fighting each other” film. Instead, it will be more like a Tom Clancy-thriller, with Iron Man fighting real world villians [sic].
I have mixed views on this. If Marvel should be unhappy with the direction of Iron Man 2, it should be with how it poorly balanced its own storyline with having to set up The Avengers. On the other hand, I’m glad that the studio recognizes that the third film can’t have yet another Iron Men battle. However, I’m unclear as to what “real-world villains” means. I’m going to put my faith in Black, but a “Tom Clancy-thriller” seems bland and unimaginative in comparison to what Iron Man could do. A film where Iron Man goes around and punches terrorists seems like a waste of a superhero, especially if he’s coming off the large-scale adventure of The Avengers, which brings me to the next point:
Iron Man 3 will be made after The Avengers and will not feature any other heroes from the Marvel Universe. Marvel is only doing crossover characters to lead up to The Avengers, and once that film is released, the plan is to go back to self-containted [sic] single-character stories.
No other heroes? Not even War Machine? Again, I have mixed feelings on this. I’m happy that the Marvel Universe will go back to “self-contained single-character stories” (although if The Avengers is a massive hit, I’ll bet that Marvel tries to shoehorn in Avengers 2 material), but the challenge is in how do you go back to a smaller story when audiences have been given the superhero movie to end all superhero movies?
I would be worried, but then I remember that Shane Black is writing and directing and all is right with the world. Iron Man 3 is slated for May 3, 2013.
Don’t take no other heroes on the movie as a bad thing. War Machine is a Iron Man character. So it would make sense for him to be in the film. And if you read an Iron Man comic, it doesn’t have random heroes just poping up unless there is some reason for them to be in the story. In the current arc there have been no Avengers in it. Well Reed Richards was in it but that was to help with the creation of his new armor.Even in Captain America there aren’t any other heroes poping up. And I don’t think we should take “Tom Clancy-thriller” to mean he’ll be fighting terrorists only. Again, in the current comic book arc, the wife and daughter of Justin Hammer are trying re-establish the company and are selling their tech not only countries but also to guerrillas in countries like Pakistan. So I can see something like that being done with a Tom Clancy twist.
I’m all for change if it’s for the better but let’s please make sure that Favreau comes back to play Happy Hogan. It’ll be a small enough role for him to continue to do while still doing other shit.
They should introduce a whole bunch of new villains in the upcoming Marvel sequels. Villains that will eventually join forces as the Masters of Evil in Avengers 2.
That move would kick some much ass
SO MUCH ANAL CAVITY!!!
I wonder if there’s any room for Val Kilmer in this one. He and Downey had such great chemistry in KKBB, and this could be the start of Val’s much-deserved comeback.
Real world villains. Real world villains. I’m sorry isn’t that what they tried and failed miserably at in the 2nd one? Why the fuck do I care about seeing Iron Man fight REAL world villains? I want to see him fight COMIC book villains, that’s the point. That’s who he fights. You wouldn’t have Godzilla fight fight Jones the Zoning commissioner would you? Say I have idea, let’s have a film about James Bond stuck in traffic… it’s more realistic?
I have a idea, let’s not have Iron Man fight supervillians, let’s have him fight those evil Islams in the dessert, like in those Tom Clancy books that Tom Clancy actual pays other people to write for him.
Iron Man one was decent, but this has easily become the most soulless and bland of comic book movie series if that’s the brilliant new direction they’ve chosen.
I have just one thing to say about this being not another “two men in iron suits fighting each other” movie.
WHOOOO!!! YES!!! What is the god-damn point of making a great super armor suit if someone else just clones it and fights you all the time?
Why must EVERY superhero in movies end up fighting a version of himself in EVERY movie?
FINALLY!
no more supervillains to fight ironman? what will happen with the mandarin and the ten ring society or something like that that was foreshadowed in the first film?
on the other hand, you don´t really need superpowered armors or advanced weapons to beat ironman, marvel can do something special with more reality based enemies, ones with the sufficient skills and resources to bring tony down. and don´t make the armor the high point of the movie, it´s cool to see new armors but in the end thats just tony´s tool to fight evil, the man inside is what counts.
Enough with Farevau and giving himself and his fat, smug, mug screen time. Letching over Scarlett Johansson and asking about “booty boot-camp.”
You ain’t lying!
He pulled a Diddy for sure. LOL!
IM2 sucked balls!
GREAT u can just say GOODBYE to Mandrin!
