Last week, we reported the exciting news that Shane Black (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang) might write and direct Iron Man 3 now that Jon Favreau was off the project and directing Magic Kingdom instead.  Now, Deadline is reporting that Shane Black will re-team with Robert Downey Jr. and direct Iron Man 3.  As to whether or not he’ll write the flick, a source tells Deadline “That’s not figured out.” I say let Black write it. There–I just figured it out.  You’re welcome, Marvel.

This is terrific news for a variety of reasons.  First off, it means that we most likely won’t have to wait past 2013 for a new Shane Black film (Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang came out in 2005 and Iron Man 3 is set for May 3, 2013). Secondly, while Kiss Kiss was Black’s directorial debut, it showed a sharp eye for comic-timing, striking visuals, and mood, and while the stakes and the technical issues become much larger with a movie like Iron Man 3, Black isn’t a rookie to this business and I know he’ll have the confidence to handle the production.  Finally, a successful Iron Man 3 could help Black get other projects off the ground.  He’s also attached to direct an adaptation of pulp hero Doc Savage and the manga Death Note, but I don’t know if he’ll be able to squeeze one of those in before heading to work on Iron Man 3.  However his schedule shakes out, I’m overjoyed that a phenomenal screenwriter and incredibly promising director like Black is coming on board the Iron Man franchise.

  1. YAY!!!!

This just made my day. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang has got to be one of my favourite movies – him and RDJ make one hell of a team.

Now, if Marvel will just screw their heads back on and get Black to write the script, they would already have made up for Iron Man 2.

  2. Astute observation above.

‘Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang’ was a solid movie. Really enjoyed it. That was Downey Jr.’s comeback film for me. Coincidentally, it was the last time Kilmer did something I admit to watching. Where have you gone, Nick Rivers?

    I digress.

The difference between KKBB and Iron Man 3 is like night and day. That being said, I didn’t think Favreau could pull off the first shellhead outing and the dude nailed it.

What should worry most fanboys and girls is what happened with Spider-Man 3 and X-Men 3. The studio has too much riding on the property to not interfere and micro-manage, which ostensibly buttfucks the whole franchise into an inevitable reboot 5 years from now.

  3. You also have to keep in mind that Spider-Man 3 and X-Men 3 were under different studios than the Iron Man franchise. Let’s just see what happens.

All in all, I’m very excited for this. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang was a fun movie and one that I enjoyed a ton. Can he pull it off? I think so.

  4. True. Iron Man is under the Marvel Studios shield, kept in the same universe as Hulk, Cap & Thor, and being steered toward The Avengers. All good signs.

The fact Favreau bailed can only harm the film. I assume he had piles of creative influence over the final cut. I don’t see Black having the same latitude.

It’s all going to fall on Downey Jr. Hopefully an actor is found that not only fills the villain spot, but a guy or gal that plays off Downey Jr. really well. Jeff Bridges, Mickey Rourke, and Sam Rockwell are all great actors, but there was no earnest in their portrayal. You need Tony Stark gone the other way. Nothing as hardcore as Heath Ledger’s Joker, but in that vein.

At the very least, I hope we aren’t served with another dipshit in a copycat suit.

  5. I hope they will include the following characters in future Iron Man sequels:

Bethany Cabe, Force, Rumiko Fujikawa, Guardsman, Iron Man 2020

I look forward to seeing the following villains in future Iron Man sequels:

Arsenal, Beetle (Abner Jenkins), Blizzard (Donnie Gill), Cobalt Man, Controller, Dreadknight, Edwin Cord, Ezekiel Stane, Fin Fang Foom, Firebrand, Firepower, Ghost, Grey Gargoyle, Hypnotia, Justine Hammer, Iron Patriot, Kearson DeWitt, Killer Shrike, Living Laser, Madame Masque, Mandarin, Mauler, Melter, MODOK, Morgan Stark/Gregory Stark, Raiders, Spymaster, Sunset Bain, Sunturion, Temugin, Titanium Man, Unicorn, Ultimo, Wong-Chu
