The first trailer for director Shane Black‘s Iron Man 3 has been released and it’s looking a lot darker for Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) this time around. Following the events of The AvengersStark is a bit more shaken up than one would have expected.  His nightmares plague him with sleepless nights and constant fear that harm will befall the people he cares about.  And it’s looking like his greatest technological achievement will become his biggest threat.  At least until the Mandarin (Ben Kingsley) makes his appearance in grand fashion (though I’m not 100% sold on his accent).

Hit the jump to watch the trailer.  The film stars also stars Don Cheadle, Gwyneth Paltrow, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Ashley Hamilton, Jon Favreau and James Badge DaleIron Man 3 opens on May 3rd, 2013.

iron-man-3-posterHere’s the official synopsis for Iron Man 3:

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce and Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of Tales of Suspense (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with The Invincible Iron Man (#1) in May of 1968. Iron Man 3 is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures and DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing and Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee and Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film releases May 3, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

why does it say april 2013? such a great trailer though:D

    • Dave Trumbore

Swapped that trailer out for the one with the proper release date at the end. It matched up scene for scene, so they must have been sitting on that one for a while.

  • Splurger

Ben Kingsley is pretty intense, gave me the chills. The voice is awesome.

  • mushu

    WOW.

  • Chad

Loved everything except Ben Kingsley’s awful voice. What is he trying to do, another bad Bane impersonation?

    • dogg

Yeah, what’s up with that? He looks all fu manchu, but sounds like a Jock from Nebraska. Shouldn’t he have some kind of accent?
      Comic geeks?

    • Person

are we ever sure it’s his voice? I thought Guy Pearce was supposed to be a villain, too.

    • Biko

that was not the Mandarin’s voice it was the Guy in the Patriot Iron Man Suit

      • Tyler

That guy in the Iron Patriot armor is Rhodey, and that suit is a newly painted War Machine. The voice was Ben Kingsley, he has a very distinguishable voice, no matter what accent.

    • Nerdgasm

THe footage at SDCC proved that , that voice is coming out of Ben Kingsly… i actually enjoyed the voice and Fiege while i was at comicon also said theres a reason behind why he speaks like that and it would not be changed.

  • interloper

This looks good, I like the modern take on the Mandarin. Was that the Telepresense Armor in this? The trend that Avengers set is carrying through. Joss Whedon had no problem putting the Avengers through hell, this is where Stark will become a true superhero coming to Avengers 2

  • Faiz

it’s a bummer though all stark’s armors were destroyed…since now he can control all of them using Mark 47….(i really wish to see 47 Iron mans storming Mandarin and his army…)

    • Nate H

we could still see that. The armors that we saw being destroyed were in display cases…and I think they were the old models. I also doubt that he has room in his shop for 47 armors. My guess would be one of two things:
      1) they are coming at the end of the movie – or more likely…
      2) He has them in the beginning but then loses control of them at some point thanks to Guy Pierce’s character. (that would explain why an armor attacks Tony and Pepper in bed)

  • Andrew

What’s the title? Dark Iron Knight?

    • Griz

If you’re implying they’re going dark (as many people are), i’d like to add that this feels about as dark as when Iron Man almost “sacrificed himself” at the end of Avengers. You could see what mood they were trying to illicit, but ultimately, the villains never had a chance in hell of winning. God i hope they do better with Avengers 2 & Man of Steel.

      • Nerdgasm

Too bad they cant redo Dark Knight Rises

  • Adrian

Tewowists. Terrowists. I love is accent.

  • Adrian

Tewowists. Terrowists. I love his accent.

  • Wes

They’ll probably reshoot stuff like his accent. Beyond that, though, that was CRAZY!!!

This looks amazing! Looks better than 2. Can’t wait to see this.

    • Pocketses

The shit I took this morning looked better than 2. But this does look really good.

      • GunsOfNavarone

        Lmao! xD

      • Nate

lol… I was thinking the same thing -yet, maybe not quite as poetically…

      • DREDD

        @ Nate,
How do you know what Pocketses shit looked like this morning? lmao!

  • tarek

Back to the roots. that is the Iron man I love.

Finally a Part 3 movie that looks like it WILL kick some ass, unlike so many others.

    • will

Uh… There already was a Part 3 that kicked ass… In July.

      • Grey

it kicked… just not as hard :P

      • Strong Enough

shut the fuck up before I “kick” you in the nuts :)

      • Nerdgasm

Only that when he says “Kick you in the nuts” what he really means is he will swing back and when he comes forward to kick he will gain good momentum up until the end where he will go off course missing your nuts completely and doing what would be considered a very Average Attempt that was miss-communicated and executed kinda like that one movie…which let me think… i think the title started with D and ended in ark Knight Rises….

Obviously his voice is being played for an audience, therefore being masked as to not identify himself so it’s going to sound different than how he will actually speak in the film.

    • MIke

That’s how it will be in the film.

  • Beatific

Looking forward to this. Hopefully they include some Extremis stuff.

  • Wiz

They are including Extremis stuff, Guy Pierce plays the doctor that develops the virus and the whole suit flying over to Tony at will is also from the Extremis storyline.

    • Beatific

The clip with Tony on the operating table reminded me of the Extremis storyline, I should read it again before the movie.

  • Nate

That was outstanding. And I have zero problems with the voice of the Mandarin. Looks like it could be the best Iron Man yet, let’s try not to get our fanboy panties in a ruffle just yet, eh girls?…

  • Matt

This looks better than Cars 2!

  • jk

Looks good! Like a real sequel to the first Iron Man. I just hope it retains some of the charm of the first movie.

  • Bern

Did anyone else check out the Captain America shield-looking tattoo on the back of Mandarin’s neck? There’s an A instead of a star in the middle, but it definitely looks like the shield.

  • Django9000

I rewound & paused that shot of what looked (to me) like a torn-jeaned Banner leg, coming to Tony’s rescue, before the Happy Hogan (death?) scene.

In the dark, it could possibly be Tony’s torn-panted leg, with one Iron Boot on.

But I rewound & paused. That’s no Iron Boot. =)

  • Yurine

    Oh fuck!

    That looks fucking insane!

  • MIke

That will be Ben Kingsley’s voice for The Madarin, Shane Black said so at SDCC months ago. Apparently he had been playing with a number of different voices and this is what they went with. The voice worked very well for what they showed at SDCC, have some faith.

  • Chris \”Super Fraud\” Nolan

Heck, at least it can’t be any worse than Dark Knight Rises !

    • Alan

Well, at least you are not blaming the filmmakers for the Colorado shootings and then suggesting that they profited from the tragedy (“Sorry my lame film drove someone nuts, govs! But at least I made money right?”), which is an improvement.

      • christ nolan super fraud

Chris Nolan did profit from the murder. What’s the old adage? Any publicity is good publicity. It’s directly his fault. The guy didn’t shoot up a twilight premiere and call himself Edward Cullen did he? Sorry your boner for the Dark Knight Rises has gone soft cause it’s a shitty film but don’t blame your hangups on me.

      • Alan

But you said that you DIDN’T mean that the filmmakers profited from the film: “I never suggested the film profiteered off the killings … ” Turns out you can’t quite form a structured thought, huh? And, again, Warner Bros. gave a “substantial” amount of money to Colorado’s Community First Foundation, Nolan also contributed to these charities, Hans Zimmer released a track in which all proceeds go to charity. They back back: you don’t, just using the tragedy to bitch about a film you don’t like.

      • Alan

        Or they GAVE back.

      • Chris super Fraud Nolan

Using sentimental hogwash to defend an indefensibly bad movie? You’re not Mit Romney are you? You should marry Chris Nolan if you think he’s such a great dude. I personally think he’s lower than fecal matter.

      • Chris super Fraud Nolan

You’re just using the tragedy to defend the movie, which is equally as sick. Would you like a number where you can get help for your mental illness? Extensive therapy might help your obsession with the DKR.

      • Alan

Err, you cited the tragedy. You brought it up. And, wow! I asked what you had done for the victims and your response is to suggest that giving charity is “sentimental hogwash.” I am just saying that the filmmakers gave to the community: the idea that you are offended by this speaks volumes about your mental state.
