Is Bryan Singer Repairing Old Cylons for a BATTLESTAR GALACTICA Movie?

Well this is kind of major.  Bryan Singer, who is circling a variety of project post-“Valkyire”, may be producing and possibly even directing a “Battlestar Galactica” feature film.  Obviously, after the Ron Moore/David Eick series finished its run there was renewed interest in the property and Universal, who owns the property, now sees the potential in bringing it to the big screen.  So where does Singer fit in and how serious is his interest?  Hit the jump to find out.

HitFix is reporting that Universal is nearing a deal with Singer to produce and possibly direct a “Battlestar Galactica” movie.

But…wait.  Haven’t Ron Moore and David Eick already done that?  Sure, the movies aired on television but they came about as close to a feature-film level of quality as they could with their basic-cable budget.  As Drew McWeeny notes, this project probably isn’t a re-imaging of BSG as much as a callback to the 1978 version, an attempt series creator Glen Larson was trying to make this past February.

Singer is a good director but I don’t know if people necessarily want to go back to the 1978 version.  I’m sure there will always be the faithful with the really bad taste (let’s face it folks; the ’78 version was campy fun at best) but type in “Battlestar Galactica” into Google Image Search and see what comes up.  Type it into IMDb and look at the first result.  I don’t want to be so harsh as to say “What’s the point?” but if Singer really wants this, he has to know the challenge he’s in for.  It’s not 2000 when there was no interest in the project.  Now the geek-sphere is watching.  Let’s see how it plays out.
