Is Michael Moore Done with Documentaries?

In an interview with the Detroit News Michael Moore, America’s favorite documentarian, hinted that he might be ready to get out of the controversy business.  While speaking about his upcoming October release, “Capitalism: A Love Story”, the director happened to mention that “maybe this will be my last documentary, or maybe for a while.”  What would Michael Moore do if he wasn’t making Congressmen look stupid or ambushing gun nuts?  Hit the jump to find out.

“I have been working on two screenplays over the last couple of years,” Moore told the paper, “One’s a comedy, one’s a mystery, and I really want to do this.”

I suppose that a change was inevitable for the writer/director – though I would have bet on Moore running for the Michigan State Senate before I would have pegged him as a closet mystery writer.  I guess the man just wants to keep things interesting.  It’s the same reason that models want to be sing and pop stars want to act – they have overwhelming confidence when it comes to their own fame.  I personally think Moore is talented enough to pull a straight film off but then again, I am getting comfortable with being really wrong.

“Capitalism: A Love Story” hits theatres on October 2nd.

Michael Moore has never made a documentary. Go look up the definition. What Moore does is the exact opposite.

Re: Tomc, you’re wrong. Documentaries are not about displaying fact without perspective, in fact, perspective (read: bias) is pretty much required to make a good doc. I’m no fan of Moore’s, he’s just a Kool-Aid drinker of another stripe to me, but what you’re saying is just silly.

Also, Moore has made scripted films before. Anyone seen his first film, the John Candy Starring Canadian invasion film, “Canadian Bacon”?

I am not suprised that Moore is giving up making his documentaries–with America slipping into neo-socialism right now he really doesn’t have anything to complain about. When the political pendulum swings back the other way I’m sure Moore will be ready to fire off another film. I’m only suprised he isn’t making a Sarah Palin bio as a parting gift to his fan base.
