Imagine Tilda Swinton as a dog. Is your heart full yet? No, try Bill Murray. And if that doesn’t work, go ahead and imagine Bryan Cranston, Scarlett Johansson and Jeff Goldblum as dogs while you’re at it. Fortunately, Wes Anderson is here with his first animated feature since 2009’s Fantastic Mr. Fox to make this very good dream a reality.
Anderson’s latest film, Isle of Dogs, heads to a fictional future Japan, where all the dogs of Megasaki City are sent to a trash heap island after fear of the fictional “dog flu” spreads. Ahead of the film’s theatrical release, the folks over at Vulture have an oh-so-adorable cast interview, all executed in adorable stop-motion animation. 13/10.
Speaking with the outlet, Anderson explained, “When it comes time to do an EPK for a movie like this, you don’t have a bunch of people sitting around on the set in costume that you can pull aside for interviews while they’re waiting for the next shot… So each of the actors did an interview and answered questions on their own — some recorded themselves on their iPhones — and we spent the next several months figuring out how to make those into the cast interviews.” Much better than your average boilerplate cast interview, eh?
Check out the Isle of Dogs cast interview below. The film arrives in theaters on March 23. Isle of Dogs also stars Bryan Cranston, Bill Murray, Jeff Goldblum, Scarlett Johansson, F. Murray Abraham, Tilda Swinton, Kunichi Nomura, Harvey Keitel, Akira Ito, Akira Takayama, Koyu Rankin, Yoko Ono, Courtney B. Vance, Greta Gerwig, Frances McDormand, Bob Balaban, and Liev Schrieber.
Here’s the official synopsis for Isle of Dogs:
ISLE OF DOGS tells the story of ATARI KOBAYASHI, 12-year-old ward to corrupt Mayor Kobayashi. When, by Executive Decree, all the canine pets of Megasaki City are exiled to a vast garbage-dump called Trash Island, Atari sets off alone in a miniature Junior-Turbo Prop and flies across the river in search of his bodyguard-dog, Spots. There, with the assistance of a pack of newly-found mongrel friends, he begins an epic journey that will decide the fate and future of the entire Prefecture.
