While you might not have heard of CCXP in Sao Paulo, Brazil, that doesn’t mean it’s not one of the biggest conventions on the planet. Over the past few years, Brazil’s Comic-Con, started by our friends at Omelete, has quickly become the go-to destination for movie studios and streaming services as a one-stop shop to reach the geek audience in Latin America. Last year, the con had 240,000 attendees and this year it’s even bigger. Because of the popularity of the convention, all the movie studios are down here promoting their upcoming slates. While San Diego used to be the place where movie studios pushed their product, CCXP definitely now has a bigger movie studio presence.

As you might have already heard, Sony world premiered the first trailer from Spider-Man: Far From Home and Men in Black: International during their CCXP panel yesterday, and today Warner Bros. decided to showcase a ton of their upcoming movies during their two-hour presentation.

It: Chapter 2

With It: Chapter 2 not hitting theaters until September 6, 2019, and the film only recently having wrapped principal production, I wasn’t sure if WB was going to offer anything during the panel. Thankfully, they did share a behind-the-scenes sizzle reel, which looked like the type of video a studio would share with promotional partners to get them excited about the sequel. In the video, we saw director Andy Muschietti talk about what he hopes to accomplish with the anticipated sequel, saying it will be serious, more intense, and have scarier moments. The video also showed some pre-production artwork, including the different departments working on the film.

Another part of the video showed new cast members Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, and others talking about what the film is about. There wasn't much footage from the film, but we did see a shot of the cast together walking across a bridge.

My favorite part, however, was some video from the very first table read. While we didn’t get to see the cast reading any lines, the video showed this massive table with every cast member listed getting ready to read the script.

The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

Imagine you are a huge LEGO Movie fan and excited to see the sequel. Now imagine you’re at CCXP in Brazil and WB announces they’re going to show new footage. You’d be excited and happy. Now imagine the footage was all in Portuguese so while you got to see the footage, you have no idea what is going on. Saying that, the sequel looked cool and I am so excited to see the next installment.

Pokemon Detective Pikachu

During the Pokemon Detective Pikachu portion of the panel, WB had the star of the film, Justice Smith, come out and talk. During the Q&A he discussed working with Ryan Reynolds for a week before filming began as they broke down the script scene by scene to add jokes. He went on to talk about his history with the games and cartoons, the challenges of acting with no one there and on green screens, and how lucky he was to land this role. Towards the end they showed the recently released trailer. I’m convinced this movie is going to be a big hit.

Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters

WB world premiered the new Godzilla 2: King of the Monsters trailer. Since the trailer will be online tomorrow, I’ll be brief. The trailer opens with Millie Bobby Brown at some sort of control station trying to use a radio system to call for help when she hears a massive sound. It looks like she is in a very bad situation.

From there the rest of the trailer is LOADED with monsters and mayhem. If you want to see the creatures being featured in King of the Monsters, this trailer isn’t holding back. The end of the trailer features some of the monsters in a city getting ready to do battle. I cannot wait to see these fights.

Obviously, the film features humans dealing with what is going on, and one of the scenes features the cast talking about how some of the monsters are clearly a danger to us and some of these titans are here to protect us. Dr. Ishiro Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) tells his colleagues something along the lines that he hopes Godzilla thinks of humanity as some sort of pet.

Wonder Woman 1984

As the Wonder Woman 1984 logo came on the screens on the side of the stage, a video message started to play on the main screen which featured director Patty JenkinsGal Gadot and Chris Pine saying how much they wanted to attend CCXP but since they couldn’t be there, they wanted to offer the attendees a look at some footage from the sequel. In addition, Pine said that Steve Trevor would definitely be returning in the sequel, but we’d have to wait till the summer of 2020 to find out how.

We did get to see some brief footage that ran under a minute. The scene starts in a mall food court in the 1980’s, where two men with guns stand near the railing on the top floor of the mall. Wonder Woman jumps into the frame to save a very young girl. To get her out of harm’s way, Woman Woman pushes the girl so she slides along the ground and ends up in the middle of a giant teddy bear.

The next shot features Wonder Woman using her magic lasso to rope the two people with guns and prevent them from harming anyone in the crowd. After using the lasso, she runs towards the railing and jumps off, using the two people she lassoed as a weight to prevent her from falling. In midair, she uses the lasso again to grab hold of something on the other side so she can use that as leverage to get to the other side of the mall.

The next shot features Wonder Woman running incredibly fast down a street packed with cars, trying to get somewhere in a hurry. Unfortunately, neither scene provided any context about what is happening, so it’s impossible to know if Kristen Wiig’s Cheetah was involved in any of the mayhem.

With Wonder Woman 1984 not arriving in theaters until June 5, 2020, Warner Bros. didn’t have to reveal any footage today since they will have another convention next year to really push the film. While I would have loved to have seen more now, getting even this brief taste of footage from the much-anticipated sequel was very cool, especially for all the fans who had to camp out to get into the panel today.

Shazam!

Unlike some of the previous DC films, Shazam! looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun and in the vein of Big except with superpowers.

The panel began with Zachary Levi coming out on stage and talking about what the film is about, how lucky he is to have landed this role, and why everyone should be excited about the upcoming DC movie. I wish I could have filmed what he said, because his energy was infectious and he looks like he was perfectly cast.

However, the highlight of the Shazam! portion of the panel was the very end, when Levi revealed he was going to let us see some brand new footage that had never been seen by anyone outside the studio.

Levi prefaced everything by saying the VFX weren’t done (they still looked great) and how the scene we were about to see was shortly after Billy had gotten his powers, but he didn’t yet know what they were or how to control them.

In the scene, Shazam is on a street with some people near him. Pretty soon Mark Strong’s character, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, shows up and tells Shazam he wants his powers. Shazam doesn’t realize Sivana is someone also gifted with superpowers and treats him like he’s no big deal. So when Sivana punches Shazam, he’s not ready for it and is knocked back onto a police car. As they continue trading punches, it’s clear Shazam is outmatched, and Sivana grabs Shazam by the throat and they take off into the sky. From a very high altitude, Sivana drops Shazam. As he fails like a brick, he’s desperately trying to stop his descent. When it looks like he’s about to crash, he somehow stops himself about an inch from the ground. From there the fight continues.

Afterward, we got a montage of footage (maybe part of the same scene) where the two of them are fighting in a toy store in a mall. Part of the scene features Shazam trying to stop Sivana by throwing a Batman toy at him, then he’s on a piano like Big and he gets excited. Unfortunately, Sivana is continuing to come at him and the two of them fly through the back wall into the mall.

Some other shots featured the younger Billy Batson in an amusement park walking intently towards something and calling out "Shazam!" and we see Zachary Levi appear. The transformation was very cool.

However, the highlight of the footage was an awesome shot of the younger Billy Batson running towards the ledge at the top of a building and then jumping off. As he jumps, before gravity pulls him down, he says "Shazam!" and a lightning bolt appears and hits him, quickly transforming him into the mighty hero and he flies off. Trust me, the shot is very cool

Final Thoughts

Overall, the WB panel did a great job showcasing some of the many films they have and the fans that slept outside to get in seemed very happy. My only complaint was the studio made everyone put away their phones so no one could take pics or video of the actors on stage. Seems like a missed opportunity for social buzz.

More from CCXP soon.
