Part of what made 2012’s Jack Reacher such an enjoyable action flick was how bare-bones it was. Where most action films today rely heavily on CGI and the supernatural, Jack Reacher was a lo-fi, welcome throwback, and judging by the new Jack Reacher: Never Go Back trailer, the sequel is following suit.

The follow-up finds Tom Cruise’s titular character returning to his roots, uncovering duplicitous officials and people of power, until he discovers that the women chosen to take over his role as head of the MP (Cobie Smulders), has been arrested for espionage. Jack Reacher being Jack Reacher, he smells something fishy and the two subsequently find themselves on the run from the law, corrupt military officials, and assassins.

While I don’t have a ton of faith in director Ed Zwick (his filmography is very hit and miss for me), I’m hoping that the original has set a template that Zwick is willing to follow and he understands why the first movie worked so well.

Check out the new Jack Reacher: Never Go Back trailer below along with the poster. The film opens October 21st and also stars Aldis Hodge, Holt McCallany, and Robert Knepper.
