A new featurette for the Lee Child adaptation Jack Reacher has been released.  The film is based on Child’s novel One Shot, which is one of 16 novels that center on the Jack Reacher character.  In this featurette, the author talks about bringing the wildly popular character to the big screen and defends the decision to cast Tom Cruise as the 6’5”, 250 lbs. title character from the book series.  Despite a grating intro that’s narrated by “Movie Trailer Guy,” the featurette provides a nice look at the film and gives fans the chance to hear Child talk about having his material adapted into a feature film.  Director Christopher McQuarrie was just recently tapped to helm Mission: Impossible 5 based on his work with Cruise on Jack Reacher, so obviously Cruise and Paramount are happy with the film.  Here’s hoping he’s put together a fun thriller that’ll please the book’s legion of fans.

Hit the jump to watch the featurette.  The film also stars Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall, Richard Jenkins, David Oyelowo, and Werner HerzogJack Reacher opens on December 21st.

As great as it is to see that he is on board, this stop the naysayers. They will bitch and bitch until they’re blue in the face, but it won’t make a difference because Paramount knows that they have a new franchise. So, it looks like we’ll be seeing more of Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher. I’m excited, not sure about anyone else.

You’re so right. There is money to be made and make it they will. As a consequence, I wont be spending. Cruise is hideously miscast so I’m sticking to the Jack Reacher of my imagination as created by Lee Child. Enjoy.

Given the opening to this article/video I expected the author to “defend the decision to cast Tom Cruise” as the 6’5″ 250 lb Jack Reacher. Instead we only get “…and Tom Cruise is a fantastic Jack Reacher”.

Not a defense at all…just a statement. We will see…

OMG, he’s the wrong height. If that’s the most important aspect of the character, then maybe he isn’t a very interesting character.

Read all the books and they’re great. No problem with Cruise as Reacher. And I love Movie Trailer Guy lol.

I’ve never read any of the Jack Reacher series. I do know if this is to be a successful Franchise. It needs be bigger than a Vehicle to show off Tom Cruise star power. Right now in his career every action movie role he takes seems to have the Ethan Hunt persona to degree. I’m only interested to see if Christopher McQuarrie Directing skill will finally Top his writing skills.

The White Male dominated Lone Hero bad ass role saving the world is kinda of boring now. It’s time to add some diversity.

    Here’s what probably happened:
Studio: “Hey Lee, Tom Cruise wants to make your Reacher Movie”.
    Lee: Cruise? He’s like 5′ 7″ isn’t he? He can’t be Reacher.!!!!!!!
Studio: “Here’s a bunch of money for you”
    Lee: “Cruise will be perfect”.!!!

Lee Child is a whore. No matter what he says, he didn’t write these books with short wimply Cruise in mind.
    That is all.

      Have to agree with you.
The Reacher character in the books is brilliant, and Child writes him well. Usually I’m waiting at the bookshop for a first day copy, but never again.
Casting Cruise as Reacher has completely destroyed my respect for him as a writer. Of course, every writer wants success & the trappings that come with it, it’s natural, but at what cost? I know I’m not alone in this view, and have participated in many ‘chat room’ conversations on the subject.
Naturally the film will be a success, but NOT because of Lee Childs talent. It will succeed due to direction, production, & star names.
      Sold your soul, man.

@whore guy. Lee Child never pretended to be making art or had some kind of artistic integrity about the reacher series. As long as Cruise kicks ass in an entertaining manner than it’s a faithful adaptation. It’s not like Shakespeare sold the rights to hamlets and allowed fucking Taylor kitsch to play him.

Pleeeeeese. A midget as Jack Reacher. All I can see when I read a Jack Reacher book is Tom Cruise. What a let down !
