It looks like that Jack Reacher sequel might actually be coming to fruition.  Director Christopher McQuarrie’s adaptation of the popular Lee Child character was a modest success when it opened last year, grossing $218 million worldwide.  The critical response was quite positive both with regards to McQuarrie’s take on the material and Tom Cruise’s portrayal of the lead character, and fans of the film (myself included) were eager to see the franchise take off.  Though initial reports made the prospect of a sequel coming to fruition seem unlikely, the film’s box office push over the $200 million mark forced Paramount and Skydance Productions to reconsider.  And reconsider they did, as the studios are now actively developing a follow-up based on another one of Child’s novels.  Hit the jump for more.

jack-reacher-sequel-never-go-back-tom-cruiseThe folks over at Deadline report that Paramount and Tom Cruise are now trying to fast track a Jack Reacher sequel based on Lee Child’s 2013 Reacher novel Never Go Back.  The story finds the titular Reacher heading back to his old military base in Virginia in order to take an old flame out to dinner.  When he finds out that the woman—now a commanding officer—has been arrested, things heat up and Reacher must get to the bottom of what’s really going on.

The hope is that McQuarrie will return to direct the sequel, but he’s currently busy prepping to direct Mission: Impossible 5 with Cruise so he’s unable to pen the screenplay.  The studio is currently out to writers for Never Go Back, and it’s possible that Cruise and McQuarrie could move on to the Jack Reacher follow-up after they complete their duties on M:I 5.  The fifth entry in the spy franchise starts production next summer in anticipation of a December 2015 release date.

Read the synopsis for Never Go Back below:

Former military cop Jack Reacher makes it all the way from snowbound South Dakota to his destination in northeastern Virginia, near Washington, D.C.: the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP. The old stone building is the closest thing to a home he ever had.

Reacher is there to meet—in person—the new commanding officer, Major Susan Turner, so far just a warm, intriguing voice on the phone.

But it isn’t Turner behind the CO’s desk. And Reacher is hit with two pieces of shocking news, one with serious criminal consequences, and one too personal to even think about.

When threatened, you can run or fight.

Reacher fights, aiming to find Turner and clear his name, barely a step ahead of the army, and the FBI, and the D.C. Metro police, and four unidentified thugs.

Combining an intricate puzzle of a plot and an exciting chase for truth and justice, Lee Child puts Reacher through his paces—and makes him question who he is, what he’s done, and the very future of his untethered life on the open road. [Amazon]

Can’t wait for Jack Reacher: Round 2!

    • Lovecraftlives

Yea! I loved the first one and look forward to the second film!

      • edge

Agreed. Btw to any “haters”…Cruise was/is amazing in this role. Cannot wait to see him back! Great character as well. Oh and I hope the director comes back he did a remarkable job making this feel like a fresh crime drama with action opposed to something generic.

      • Lovecraftlives

I have the blu ray of this film and it is simply amazing. I hope that get Robert Duvall to come back as well. I haven’t read any of the books, but I really want to soon!

      • Leo Spaceman

There are very few recurring character’s in the Reacher Novels. The whole premise of the book’s is Reacher drifting around the country getting himself involved in the local dilemmas and meeting a whole new cast of characters to punch, break, beat, punish or make sweet love to.

  • Idris Elba

Idris Elba needs to be the villain in this movie.

    • Dip

hell yeah…he killed it in his last villain role imo (won’t spoil it)

  • Leo Spaceman

    Jack Reacher 2: Reach Harder.

Anyways, Tom Cruise is pretty much the exact opposite Reacher from the books. He pulls off the acting decent enough but physically they couldn’t have picked a more tiny man to 6’4 Muscle-bound man with blonde hair blue eyes and personality wise, Tom Cruise is nothing like Reacher. In Die Trying, Reacher’s boss in the military says that Reacher is the single least likely man on Earth to ever join a cult. Tom Cruised on the other hand…

    • SomeGuy

I still enjoy him in the role and am excited for a sequel, but that’s interesting that you bring up that bit from Die Trying – especially with Eyes Wide Shut in mind.

      • Leo Spaceman

Haven’t read Eyes Wide Shut. Don’t spoil much if you can but does Reacher get stuck in a cult?

      • SomeGuy

Eyes Wide Shut is a film with Tom Cruise containing cult-like elements. I haven’t read any of the Reacher novels but sure would like to.

    • Ched Groundheggin

great, and everyone bitched about the same thing before the first movie and then the movie turned out to be pretty good-

      let…. it… go…

  • Steven

Terrific news. Loved the first one.

  • lobtaylor

I really liked the first movie…it made me go out and buy the whole series!
I cant wait to see what they do with the sequel…I hopew they bring back Tom Cruise too.

  • The Flobbit

I greatly enjoyed the first film – Cruise’s charisma was palpable, and the Dirty Harry/Bullitt-esque tone was fresh and slick; great cast too – but there are plenty of other Reacher novels that would make a better jump to the big screen. Some that come to mind: Gone Tomorrow, The Hard Way, Die Trying…

Still, DEFINITELY looking forward to this.

  • The Flobbit

Of course, I’m totally open to another series with a younger Reacher – Chris Hemsworth, maybe. And Jim Caviezel would kick ass as Reacher too. Who’s to say only Tom (who by the way was excellent) should have a monopoly on this?

    • Ched Groundheggin

well ..he produced it from the ground up, he isn’t going to let go so easily,

      • The Flobbit

I like Tom Cruise. I want to see more Reacher-Cruise, but I want to see other versions too.

    • milo

Caviezel would have been perfect, huge mistake going with Cruise instead of someone like him who can actually bring the character to life.

      • The Flobbit

Caviezel would have brought brains, brawn, and amazing acting style and charisma. I really did like Tom Cruise though.

  • Cog

Tom C was good..am shocked but happy.

  • Person

This is the best sequel news I’ve read in a while.
