It looks like that Jack Reacher sequel might actually be coming to fruition.  Director Christopher McQuarrie’s adaptation of the popular Lee Child character was a modest success when it opened last year, grossing $218 million worldwide.  The critical response was quite positive both with regards to McQuarrie’s take on the material and Tom Cruise’s portrayal of the lead character, and fans of the film (myself included) were eager to see the franchise take off.  Though initial reports made the prospect of a sequel coming to fruition seem unlikely, the film’s box office push over the $200 million mark forced Paramount and Skydance Productions to reconsider.  And reconsider they did, as the studios are now actively developing a follow-up based on another one of Child’s novels.  Hit the jump for more.

The hope is that McQuarrie will return to direct the sequel, but he’s currently busy prepping to direct Mission: Impossible 5 with Cruise so he’s unable to pen the screenplay.  The studio is currently out to writers for Never Go Back, and it’s possible that Cruise and McQuarrie could move on to the Jack Reacher follow-up after they complete their duties on M:I 5.  The fifth entry in the spy franchise starts production next summer in anticipation of a December 2015 release date.

Read the synopsis for Never Go Back below:

Former military cop Jack Reacher makes it all the way from snowbound South Dakota to his destination in northeastern Virginia, near Washington, D.C.: the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP. The old stone building is the closest thing to a home he ever had.

Reacher is there to meet—in person—the new commanding officer, Major Susan Turner, so far just a warm, intriguing voice on the phone.

But it isn’t Turner behind the CO’s desk. And Reacher is hit with two pieces of shocking news, one with serious criminal consequences, and one too personal to even think about.

When threatened, you can run or fight.

Reacher fights, aiming to find Turner and clear his name, barely a step ahead of the army, and the FBI, and the D.C. Metro police, and four unidentified thugs.

Combining an intricate puzzle of a plot and an exciting chase for truth and justice, Lee Child puts Reacher through his paces—and makes him question who he is, what he’s done, and the very future of his untethered life on the open road. [Amazon]
