Though movie fans are certainly happy that Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street will indeed be opening in 2013 after rumors circulated that the pic might not be ready in time, Paramount’s decision to push Wolf to Christmas Day means that the Tom Clancy thriller Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is getting the short end of the stick.  Initially slated for a prime holiday release, director Kenneth Branagh’s film now opens in the midst of the cinematic dead zone known as January, but hopefully the film will be a breath of fresh air amongst the other studio stinkers.  The reboot of sorts stars Chris Pine as Ryan, a Moscow-based financial analyst who faces off against his employer when he discovers a plot to finance a terrorist attack designed to collapse the U.S. economy.

Paramount has released a few new images from the pic, teasing the hand-to-hand combat and giving a first look at Keira Knightley’s character.  Check out the images after the jump.  The film also stars Branagh and Kevin CostnerJack Ryan: Shadow Recruit opens on January 17, 2014 in traditional theaters and IMAX.

Here’s the official synopsis for Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit:

Based on the character created by bestselling author Tom Clancy, “Jack Ryan” is a global action thriller set in the present day.  This original story follow a young Jack (Chris Pine) as he uncovers a financial terrorist plot.

The story follows him from 9/11, through his tour of duty in Afghanistan, which scarred him forever, and into his early days in the Financial Intelligence Unit of the modern CIA where he becomes an analyst, under the guardianship of his handler, Harper (Kevin Costner).  When Ryan believes he’s uncovered a Russian plot to collapse the United States economy, he goes from being an analyst to becoming a spy and must fight to save his own life and those of countless others, while also trying to protect the thing that’s more important to him than anything, his relationship with his fiancée Cathy (Keira Knightley).

Was excited for this movie until they moved it to January. It’s usually a bad sign as it’s a dumping ground for movies. At least Pine has still got Star Trek to keep him occupied and a paycheck.

It’s not that bad. I don’t know what you thought of Safe House but that came out last year in February and that went on to make $208 million at the box office worldwide. So just because it’s been pushed back into early next year, it doesn’t mean it’s gonna be a flop. Besides I think the cast and director will be it’s main draw. People will watch it for those reasons alone.

Pine certainly is a draw, not so sure about Brannagh though. Don’t get me wrong, I love the guy and I loved Thor, but besides that I don’t know if he’s well known in the States as a director. Hope to see this movie being succesful though.

Knightley, Costner, and, yes, Pine should make it a draw, plus the recent death of Tom Clancy may compel more people to see this movie in “homage” or whatnot.

I hope so! This movie looks decent at the very least

I say it looks more than decent. I like the political side of things, plus the cast has charisma out the wazoo, and the action looks fun. I am actually getting Star Trek Into Darkness vibes from it…just on earth.

Keira Knightley is looking pretty. Maybe she put on a little weight?
