Far From the Madding Crowd looks like it falls firmly in Fox Searchlight’s wheelhouse (in the period film way, not the quirky indie way), which seems like a good thing in this case.  The Thomas Hardy adaptation stars Carey Mulligan, Michael SheenMatthias Schoenaerts, (who you can currently see in The Drop) and Tom Sturridge (Effie Gray) and looks like one of those gorgeous high caliber pieces I’ll never see on my own, but will be glad I did once someone else drags me to it.

Hit the jump to check out the trailer and poster for Far From the Madding Crowd.  It was directed by Thomas Vinterberg (The HuntDear Wendy) and adapted for the screen by David Nicholls (One DayStarter for 10).  The film will be released by Fox Searchlight on May 1, 2015.  It also stars Juno Temple and Jessica Barden

Steve Martin, Rihanna and Jim Parsons Talk HOME; Plus Our Thoughts on the First Footage From the New DreamWorks Animation Film

Even though it’s based on a novel, called The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex, the animated feature Home (due out in theaters on March 27, 2015) creates a world that feels wholly original, beautifully inventive and fun.  After checking out select scenes from the film, it’s also clearly a story of family and friendship that will tug at your heartstrings.

Collider was invited over to the DreamWorks Animation campus for a presentation from director Tim Johnson (Over the Hedge, Antz) that previewed a handful of scenes that gave a glimpse into the world that the film is creating, along with its rather unique inhabitants.  Hit the jump to find out what we thought about the footage, what you should know about the film, and a Q&A with voice actors Rihanna, Jim Parsons and Steve Martin.

First PAN Images Show a Screaming Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard in Joe Wright’s PETER PAN Prequel

We’re almost at the end of 2014, which means we’re long overdue when it comes to marketing the movies of summer 2015.  Today, Warner Bros. has released the first Pan images along with what’s sure to be the first of 197 character posters. The film “tells the untold story of how a young orphan boy from London is spirited away to the magical Neverland where he finds great adventures that shape him into the hero known to generations as Peter Pan.”  These images show us not only Levi Miller as Pan, but also Hugh Jackman as the villainous Blackbeard, and um…well…yeah.  None of these images are too encouraging, but I have faith in director Joe Wright.  While he does have a tendency to go overboard in his staging and visuals, his past work promises we’re not going to get a run-of-the-mill Peter Pan story even though I was never all that curious about the character’s origin story.

Hit the jump to check out the first Pan images along with a poster of Miller as the eponymous character.  The film opens July 17, 2015, and also stars Garrett Hedlund (TRON Legacy) as Hook; Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) as Tiger Lily; Adeel Akhtar (The Dictator) as Smee, Amanda Seyfried as Mary; Jack Charles (Mystery Road) as The Chief/Tiger Lily’s father; Taejoo Na (The Kick) as Kwahu; Nonso Anozie (Ender’s Game) as Bishop; Kathy Burke (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) as Mother Barnabas; Kurt Egyiawan (Skyfall) as Murray; Lewis MacDougall (In the Name of the Children) as Nibs; and newcomer Leni Zieglmeier as Wendy Darling.

In Goosebumps, apparently arriving in theaters in 2016 now, Jack Black plays a semi-fictionalized version of R.L. Stine, but now you can check out the new film’s assorted monster designs in these new images.  They’re meme-ready marketing materials, so they’re not stills from the film itself.  Rather, this almost feels like the marketing department beating the toy license holders to the punch when it comes to these reveals, and wisely controlling their brand in the process.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS Trailer Confirmed to Play This Weekend in Front of All Movies at Select Theaters; Find out Which Ones

star-wars-the-force-awakens-trailer

Last week, we reported the rumor that Disney might take a unique approach to releasing their first Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer by showing it in front of every movie at select theaters over Thanksgiving weekend.  Granted, the Thanksgiving weekend is traditionally one of the biggest of the year for the box office, but why only release it only a handful of theaters (the original reddit post regarding this rumor had it pegged at 100)?

I was a bit dubious about this news, but we now have official confirmation as Regal has posted on their website that nine of their theaters will have the trailer running in front of every movie from November 28 – November 30th.  Hit the jump for more on the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer, and to find out where you can see it. Sylvester Stallone Says THE EXPENDABLES 4 Will Be More Violent; Admits The PG-13 Rating For THE EXPENDABLES 3 Was a Mistake

by     Posted 3 hours ago

the-expendables-3-pg-13-mistake

There was a lot of backlash when The Expendables 3 was rated PG-13 in order to garner a wider audience.  Between that move and the unfortunate leak that occurred several weeks before the film’s release, the sequel didn’t really hit the box office with its best foot forward.  And now franchise creator Sylvester Stallone is weighing in by saying that rating the film for more family friendly audiences was a “horrible miscalculation.”  Incidentally, he says this on the eve of the film’s Blu-ray release, which will feature an unrated version of the picture.  He also promises that The Expendables 4, should it happen, will be more violent.

Samuel L. Jackson Tweets Behind-the-Scenes Images from Quentin Tarantino’s THE HATEFUL EIGHT

What a difference a year makes.  At the beginning of 2014, Quentin Tarantino shelved The Hateful Eight after a draft of the script was leaked online.  But as the year has progressed, Tarantino has gone from suing over the leak to having a staged reading to casting and is now ready to film entirely in Colorado next month.  Samuel L. Jackson is once again reuniting with Tarantino, and tweeted a couple images from behind the scenes.  Admittedly, there’s nothing major here—no costumes or sets—but it is nice to see the assembled cast and have a reminder we’re getting a new Tarantino movie next year.

THE WALKING DEAD Recap: “Crossed”

AMC’s The Walking Dead will enjoy its mid-season finale next weekend, so tonight’s episode was all about the setup, as you might have expected.  Before they take a two-month break, however, Rick & Company have quite a bit of work to do.  There are two of their own who are currently in the hands of some crazed hospital employees, and any wrong moves could cost numerous lives.  While there’s a good chance that next week’s hour will end in a frustrating cliffhanger, at least tonight’s penultimate run put all the pieces in place.

THE AFFAIR Recap: “7″

the-affair-recap-season-1-episode-7
In “7,” The Affair (both proper noun and otherwise) had a reckoning.  As I’ve noted all season, one of the things that makes The Affair so engaging, but also so difficult, is how real and natural its dialogue can feel.  The fights and confrontations in “7″ were hard to experience, even from a removed perspective, because they had in them such universal truths.  And, while seemingly removed from one another for most of the episode, Alison and Noah’s stories both followed similar structures.  Hit the jump for why “it’s the end of summer, are you heading back to Gotham soon?”

Read the STAR WARS Original Opening Crawl Before It Was Finessed by Brian De Palma

star-wars-opening-crawl

You can’t have Star Wars without the opening crawl, and I admit I’ll be excited on December 18, 2015 when Star Wars: The Force Awakens appears on screen followed by the first new crawl text in ten years.  Like all other aspects of almost any other production, Star Wars: A New Hope went through plenty of tweaks, and the opening crawl was among them.  The original screenplays for the trilogy are fascinating (Star Wars: The Annotated Scripts is a great read), and a page from a 1976 draft recently found its way online.  The opening crawl presented in this draft isn’t drastically different from what’s in the final film—the gist is the same—but George Lucas, with the help of friend Brian De Palma, were able to finesse the language and make it read better.

HOMELAND Recap: “There’s Something Else Going On”

by     Posted 14 hours ago

homeland-recap-season-4-episode-9

“There’s Something Else Going On” was another incredible, tense, and twisted hour from Homeland that stuck to what the show does best: political posturing and CIA business.  It’s not surprising that almost all of this season’s best episodes have done away with the soap opera elements (Carrie’s “trip” through the city ignited a few, they were contained in her mind, so they get a pass).  “There’s Something Else Going On” showed just how difficult and sprawling this war has gotten, and that, as Carrie said last week, even the right choices are wrong.  Hit the jump for “what the fuck?  What the fucking fuck??”

THE FLASH VS. ARROW Crossover Interview; Stephen Amell, Grant Gustin, David Ramsey, Emily Bett Rickards, Danielle Panabaker, Carlos Valdes, and Producers Talk Two Night Crossover Event

The epic two-night cross-over event for The CW series The Flash and Arrow (airing December 2nd and 3rd) is not only going to be unbelievably cool for comic book fans, but it’s just fun storytelling on a grand scale.  There are laughs, big action sequences, heartfelt moments and a couple of big surprises, all leading up to the sure to be jaw-dropping winter finales on December 9th and 10th.

Following a special screening of the episodes, actors Stephen Amell, Grant Gustin, David Ramsey, Emily Bett Rickards, Danielle Panabaker and Carlos Valdes were joined by executive producers Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Marc Guggenheim to talk about why they wanted to do this big cross-over so soon, making the decision to have The Flash and Arrow fight each other but also team up against someone else, what it was like to do the big Flash and Arrow fight scene, how Team Flash and Team Arrow affect each other, when we might see the next cross-over, what the actors most enjoy about working on each other’s shows, creating the impression that they actually have a lot more money than they have for what they pull off, and how they decide which villains they want to bring on each show.  Check out what they had to say after the jump, and be aware that there are some spoilers.

Georgina Haig Talks THE MULE, Connecting to Her Character, Bringing Elsa from FROZEN to Life on ONCE UPON A TIME, FRINGE, and More

Written by Leigh Whannell, Angus Sampson and Jaime Browne, the crime drama The Mule, set in 1983, tells the story of what happens when a naive man (Sampson) with lethal narcotics in his stomach is detained by Australian Federal Police. While locked in a hotel room and watched by cops, criminals, lawyers and his own mother, he’s determined to withhold the evidence for as long as he can.

During this exclusive phone interview with Collider, actress Georgina Haig (who plays legal aid lawyer Jasmine Griffiths) talked about what attracted her to The Mule, how she connected to this character, making the role three-dimensional, Jasmine’s secret ambitions, and why making this movie available to so many different people at the same time could really help give it a fair shot.  She also talked about being the physical embodiment of Elsa from Frozen on Once Upon A Time, feeling very protective of her, and getting to wear that dress, along with what being a part of Fringe means to her and whether she’d like to do more American television.  Check out what she had to say after the jump.
