The first trailer for director Brian Helgeland’s Jackie Robinson biopic, 42, has gone online. No sports-related trailer is complete without a walk down the tunnel from the locker room and this one is no different. Where the trailer quickly distances itself is in the film’s fearless to take on race relations, a central part to Robinson’s rise to fame in the sports world. Boseman takes on the role whole-heartedly and looks to be an absolute force in the film. I’m usually not a fan of contemporary songs in period trailers (I’m looking at you, The Great Gatsby), but Jay-Z’s track nails it this time around.
42 stars Chadwick Boseman as Robinson, with Harrison Ford, Christopher Meloni, Jon Bernthal, Alan Tudyk and John C. McGinley, and opens April 12th, 2013. Hit the jump to watch the trailer.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures are teaming up with director Brian Helgeland for “42,” the powerful story of Jackie Robinson, the legendary baseball player who broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier when he joined the roster of the Brooklyn Dodgers. “42″ will star Academy Award(R) nominee Harrison Ford (“Witness”) as the innovative Dodger’s general manager Branch Rickey, the MLB executive who first signed Robinson to the minors and then helped to bring him up to the show, and Chadwick Boseman (“The Express”) as Robinson, the heroic African American who was the first man to break the color line in the big leagues.

This trailer was fantastic! One thing bugs me though about a lot of trailers is the use of modern music for period films. I have nothing against modern music and I know it’s a marketing tool but for films like this, please go with original soundtrack material or classical music. Makes the trailer look and sound so much better. The Great Gatsby is another example.
Baz always uses contemporary music. Watch his movies before complaining about his use of music. PS I agree though that i would prefer classical or an OG soundtrack, but who am I to complain about a director’s very clearly established style.

Instead of using cheesy old classic music this bombastic tune sets the tone of Jackie as a Superhero which is exactly what he was.
