With director M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth opening this weekend, Sony Pictures invited us to the Virgin Galactic Spaceport in New Mexico for the press junket.  As you can imagine, it was an amazing place to talk about the movie.  If you’re not familiar with the plot, After Earth stars Will Smith and Jaden Smith as a father and son who crash land on a post-apocalyptic Earth, and it’s up to the son to fight for survival when the father is seriously injured.   For more on the film, watch three clips and some behind-the-scenes footage.  After Earth also stars Sophie Okonedo and Zoe Kravitz.

During our interview with Jaden Smith, he talked about why he took such a long break since The Karate Kid, how he prepared for After Earth, the best part of filming in Costa Rica, his love of skateboarding and what tricks he can do, and his desire to be in the Men in Black franchise.  Hit the jump to watch.

Jaden Smith:

  • Talks about skateboarding and what tricks he can do
  • Talks about why such a long break between Karate Kid and After Earth.  Has to do with his dad.  Says it won’t be such a long time for his next film and also how he’s going to be doing more music.
  • How did the script change during the development process and how did he prepare for the role
  • What was the best part of filming in Costa Rica
  • Has he mentioned to his dad that he could be a Men in Black officer

Holy Crap the dude look so much like his dad.

  • Gambit

He actually seems like a nice kid. Definitely does have his father’s swag.

That’s what I was about to say…..more often than not it seems that children of big Hollywood stars are usually assholes, coke heads, or both, but Jaden seems very down to earth and nice.

Did Frosty just say “really good”? – sounds like the kiss of death to me…

He’s one of the few people I can’t stand more than Chris Hardwick.

    • Jack Inthebox

I can’t stand this kid either.

Nice to have a rich daddy who pays to make you a ‘star’ eh?

You can’t choose your parents man. He seems nice enough considering his fortunate position.

Nice kid. Karate Kid was genuinely a decent movie, I thought. He definitely trained hard for it (did you see the standing split he had to do?!). It kinda sucks that his dad only lets him do movies that he personally develops, though. Will Smith has kinda turned into a tool as of late. He’s still smooth in interviews, but the way he handles his movies and the demands he makes are so outlandish these days. I’m sure that if Jaden was able to pick, he could’ve found a better second movie that a piece of M. Night Shyamalan garbage. He’s still got 4 years under his dad’s rule, though, so here’s hoping he gets something better after this…

What do you mean ‘as of late’?

I just mean recently – like the past 5 years or so. I used to be a huge Will Smith fan…I grew up watching Fresh Prince and I literally have the dialogue of Independence Day memorized. So I love me some Will Smith. Or at least, I used to. But the quality of his films has gone down, and if you read all the reports of his ridiculous demands and onset behavior now, it seems like he’s a totally different person – and not a great one.

I am glad I was never put in movies as a12 year old. I shutter to think how hated my 12 year old self would have been. I feel bad for this kid he seems to have grown up and become a lot cooler since karate kid days

Jaden was annoying as Hell on the graham Norton show here in the UK. And I mean real bad! I had to turn it off. Will was too though to be fair.

He was pretty good when he was a little kid in films, including karate kid, but in real life, just a cocky, jive talkin wannabe rapper. Tone it down a bit kid!

This film looks great to me though!

In a couple of years it would be cool to see him star in a “Fresh Prince” reboot.

I think he misheard the question about the script changing. But that’s okay. He’s definitely got his dad’s charm and charisma. Seems like a nice kid. Great interview, Steve!

It was so crappy they handed out toilet paper in the lobby.
