Will Smith is playing Deadshot in Suicide Squad. Jada Pinkett Smith played Fish Mooney on Gotham. Now the DC Comics world may have hooked another member of the Smith family.

Speaking to Flicks and the City about superheroes, actor Tyler James Williams (Dear White People) noted how “it’s great to see Static Shock is happening with Jaden.”

We last reported on Static Shock back in October when Warner Bros. announced that its digital division would be developing series based on the DC Comics along with Mortal Kombat and Critters. Django Unchained producer Reginald Hudlin is taking the lead on the Static Shock series, which will feature Virgil Hawkins, aka the superhero “Static”, who has advanced powers of electromagnetism.

We should definitely take Williams’ comment with a grain of salt. It’s possible that a game of telephone has become a little screwy and that Smith is simply in consideration for Static Shock. However, if he does have the gig, I’ll be interested in seeing what he does with it. I thought Smith gave a strong performance in The Karate Kid, and I want to see him in more movies or TV series.

After After Earth flopped, Jaden Smith became more of a punchline due to his social media posts as opposed to a potential movie star that had a breakout hit with the remake of The Karate Kid. A year ago, he signed on to co-star with Liev Schreiber the slavery drama Good Lord Bird, and a Karate Kid sequel is still in development hell. A superhero series could definitely be good Smith’s career if it’s got strong writing.

If Jaden Smith has been cast to star in Static Shock, I assume this will lead to Willow Smith muttering “nerds” more often at family dinner.
