One of my favorite movies from this year’s Toronto International Film Festival was writer-director Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals. The film is based on the Austin Wright novel Tony and Susan and stars Amy Adams as a successful art dealer whose former flame (Jake Gyllenhaal) sends her an advance copy of his new, intense thriller manuscript for a novel inspired by their relationship. The film follows a parallel story track as both the current-day events and those within the manuscript, titled “Nocturnal Animals, continue to unfold. Loaded with fantastic performances, a smart script, and amazing design from every department, the film again shows Tom Ford – who previously helmed A Single Man – is a real talent behind the camera. The film also stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Isla Fisher, Armie Hammer, Laura Linney, Andrea Riseborough, Michael Sheen, and Jena Malone. For more on Nocturnal Animals read Matt’s review or watch the trailer.

At the Los Angeles press day I landed an exclusive video interview with Jake Gyllenhaal. He talked about working with Tom Ford and why he’s a great collaborator, what we need to do to get him to make more movies, and upcoming projects like Bong Joon-ho’s Okja and Daniel Espinosa’s sci-fi thriller Life. Check out what he had to say in the video above and below is a list of what we talked about and some images from the film.

Nocturnal Animals is now playing in limited release and expands into more theaters this week and goes wide December 9th.

Jake Gyllenhaal:

  • What do we need to do to get Tom Ford to make more movies?
  • What was it like working with him and someone that focuses on every detail?
  • Talks about Bong Joon-ho’s Okja and Daniel Espinosa’s Life and what they’re about.
