JAMES BOND 23 Officially Titled SKYFALL; New Details Revealed [Updated with Images & Video of the London Press Conference]

     November 3, 2011

Sony Pictures held a press conference today to announce details on the 23rd James Bond film.  First up, Sony confirmed the title would be Skyfall, which sounds a bit sci-fi, but is a billion times better than “Quantum of Solace“.  As for the title’s meaning, producer Barbara Broccoli says, “It has emotional context which will be revealed in the film.”  The press conference was also attended by director Sam Mendes, co-producer Michael G. Wilson, and cast members Daniel Craig, Javier Bardem, Judi Dench, Bérénice Marlohe, and Naomie Harris.

The official James Bond twitter, @007, tweeted the logline: “Bond’s loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.” Hit the jump for more juicy details on 007′s next adventure.  The film also stars Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney, and Ben Whishaw.  Skyfall is due out November 9, 2012. [We've updated the story with the press release, as well as photos and video from the press conference, all of which you can check out after the jump.]

skyfall-007-logo-press-conference-01HeyUGuys did an awesome job of live-blogging the event and they took a photo of the tentative logo (seen right).  Here are the major details regarding the new film:

  • Shooting on Skyfall began today.
  • We knew that Marlohe was the new Bond girl.  At the press conference, it was revealed that her “glamours, enigmatic character” is named named “Severin”. [I guess because of all the severing she does?]
  • Naomie Harris says her character’s name is “Eve” and that she’s a field agent. There was no mention of the previous report that she was playing Moneypenny. [For those wondering, Moneypenny's first name is "Jane" in Ian Fleming's novels.]
  • Marlohe says she’s been learning to fire guns, and Harris says her prep works includes doing yoga three times a week, stunt driving, firing machine guns, stunt training, jumping out of cars, and running up and down stairs.  [That sounds insane.  How many stairs?]
  • Skyfall doesn’t relate to any existing property.  It’s a stand-alone story and doesn’t connect to the first two movies [So much for "QUANTUM".  The world wept.]
  • The producers implied they wouldn’t reveal some character names because it’s possible that some fans may recognize them.

In terms of information revealed, I would say they announced some good stuff.  Sure, there were no major plot points, but I’m glad we found out a bit more on Harris’ character and I think it’s a good choice that they’re deciding to make an independent story rather than force a QUANTUM mythos that no one really cares about.

Exciting stuff. As for no character names being revealed, the rumour-mill has it that Fiennes will be stroking a white cat. Sounds plausable as the only think holding up the re-use of Blofeld was Kevin McClory (60s Bond screenwriter), who controlled the character rights. McClory died a few years back so perhaps that cleared the way. Whatever, I can’t wait.

“Skyfall doesn’t relate to any existing property. It’s a stand-alone story and doesn’t connect to the first two movies [So much for "QUANTUM". The world wept.]”

QUANTUM could still come back later. SPECTRE was featured in the first two Bond films and then the third, Goldfinger, was stand-alone. SPECTRE then came back strong for the next few films so they may be doing the same with Craig’s Bond films.

Either way, a lot of great news that has me very excited.

  • matt

I had forgotten for a second that I was reading some of Goldberg’s work who always seems to fit some worthless commentary into each of his “news articles” making them seem very blog postish.

  • kyle

    Fiennes is playing…Q

  • grittymcgritterson

Sigh…..another awkward bond title….CARTE BLANCHE was such a bold, sexi title. what a shame.

    • lugo

i’m with you. skyfall sounds like a videogame title. And i care about the quantum organization, matt.

  • Ringbearer1420

Voldermort does not a Blofeld make.

  • Joe

Quantum of Solace was actually a bond story title so you can’t (you can but then you just sound like an idiot that doesn’t know anything) just say it was a stupid title and something can be a “billion times” better.

  • duder

I wonder if Javier Bardem is 006?

  • I cry u smile

Can’t wait for this movie XD

  • louim

Just out of curiosity, why do hate the title “Quantum of Solace”?

    • Ringbearer1420

Because it’s the perfect title and sums the story up perfectly and Matt Goldberg doesn’t own a dictionary?

  • spence

sounds good to me! I’m especially excited that Gary Powell is returning to do the stunts. Quantum’s stunts were done by the guy that did the Bourne movies. That style works for that, but Bond’s action needs to be a little more elegant. Powell did great work in Casino Royale, which I still consider the best Bond film ever made.

  • Kenny B

Bond movie titles have a certain ring to them. Quantum of Solace has a ring, but at the wrong end of the scale.

  • ATLGreg1

Why, again, should everyone rejoice at there being no conclusion to the Quantum storyline? I, for one, feel a little cheated that they’ve built this organization up and now are just going to bail on it. I hope that they’re just taking a break and then bring it back. Not closing out the storyline would cast a shadow over the first two films. I understand that you can say that Bond got his closure at the end of QoS. Thus, taking a break and introducing a more standalone villain makes sense. But I hope they’re not dropping the Quantum story altogether. Perhaps Fiennes will be a Blofeld-esque character, but for Quantum, and his scenes will be more about setting up a fourth movie.

  • Mark Dedaj

‘Quantum of Solace’ is a very elegant title, ‘Skyfall’ sounds ambiguous without any context because there’s nothing to associate with it yet except a logo, for all anyone knows it could be the perfect title.

  • pi

CARTE BLANCE would have been an elegant title. SKYFALL, i agree, feels like a video game. but it feels MODERN so i guess it works. QUANTUM OF SOLACE was a great title, just a mediocre movie(and a bad one compared to its predecessor).

damn SAM MENDES directing, JOHN LOGAN co-writing, DANIEL CRAIG back! and Roger Deakins lensing(IN TIME looked effin beautiful). i’m so excited!

  • Leo

SkyFall. The Sky is falling. (BOMBS AND DOOMSDAY shenanigans)

And damn, 007 is looking kind of old. Thank you makeup for probably being able to take 10 years off of him when the film comes out

  • Vince

Does he get the girl this time?
Not that I care that much Danny is a boring 007

  • batmanrules

Yes!!! Im so excited about this movie..I love Daniel Craig as James Bond..I cant wait!!!

  • Pi

man, Barbara Brocolli is HOT! so elegantly beautiful and effin hot! she looks like a former bond girl. LOL

  • Taj mahal Tour

Sam Mendes is directing Daniel Craig in Bond 23, Javier Bardem will be a bad guy, Ralph Fiennes is still strongly rumored for the film and Judi Dench returns as M, while Naomi Harris will play Miss Moneypenny.
