James Cameron is reportedly developing a TV series based off his 1994 film True Lies.  The original movie centered on a family man (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) living a double-life as a spy, and his wife (played Jamie Lee Curtis) who wants more excitement in her life.  Action-comedy ensues.  According to Deadline, the project is being shopped to the networks with Rene Echevarria (The 4400) is the writer/showrunner, and is  executive producing with Cameron and Lightstorm Entertainment’s Rae Sanchini and Jon Landau.

Cameron’s last foray into episodic television was the 2000 series Dark Angel starring Jessica Alba.  Echevarria also served as an executive producer on that program.  Hit the jump to check out the 1994 trailer for True Lies.

  1. LOVED True lies! But its Bill Paxtons character that needs a Spin off show/film. A smarmy cheesy used car salesman posing as a spy to bag bored housewives…. Brilliant!

  2. WTF??????????????????????????! Its hella late! It happened like 15 million years ago and there are tonnes of spy shows on the tele right now! Bwahahahahahahhahahahahhahaaa!

Like I always say, I want some of what they are smoking!! LOLzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

  3. The planned True Lies television series could actually be interesting if done right. It would be good if each season of the series is based on current affairs and the Omega Sector battles a real world threat such as Al-Qaeda, the Taliban, Iranian extremists, North Korean extremists, Somali pirates, Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s forces, etc.

They should include an ensemble cast, reveal the inner workings of the Omega Sector, explore themes from the film such as family, trust and betrayal and they can incorporate some of the memorable elements from the movie with dancing the Argentinean tango to Por una Cabeza, chasing villains by horse through a city, traveling to different countries for missions, a Harrier jet attacking an office building, a dropped MAC-10 sub-machine gun falling down a flight of stairs where it fires continuously all by itself killing several henchmen, the female lead performing an erotic dance in lingerie, etc.
