James Cameron and Producer Jon Landau Talk about the AVATAR Special Edition at Blu-Con 2010

by     Posted: November 2nd, 2010 at 10:05 pm

If you’re a fan of Avatar and can’t wait to own the Avatar Special Edition Blu-ray arriving in a few weeks, you’re going to love the video I shot today at Blu-Con 2010.  That’s because writer-director James Cameron and producer Jon Landau spoke to the convention for about an hour and I recorded the entire thing. During their time on stage, the two filmmakers explained just how much work went into making Avatar and why they love the Blu-ray format.  They also went into great detail about the technical benefits of Blu-ray and how the Avatar Special Edition will have three versions on the same disc and all the consumer will have to do is make one choice and the disc does the rest.  Cameron also explained how Fox gave them the money to finish up sixteen minutes of deleted scenes at a cost of almost a million dollars a minute.

The other thing I loved about what Cameron had to say was that we aren’t going to get screwed over with another Avatar Special Edition down the road.  He said that he wanted this special edition to literally have everything, so you don’t have to worry that if you buy this, another one will be released next year.  It won’t happen.  More after the jump:

Some of the other highlights from the Q&A towards the end of the second video were:

  • One of the holdups with 3D is that there aren’t enough 3D cameras.  He said as they are made they are being used.
  • Cameron said it takes 6 months for good post conversion and he thinks it should only be done on library titles that could have never been shot in 3D like Jaws and Close Encounters
  • Regarding the 16 minutes of finished deleted scenes from Avatar, he said they were finished in 3D so when they eventually release a 3D version, it’s ready to go.

Again, if you’re a fan of Avatar, or just want to see how much work went into making Avatar come to life, you should watch these two videos.  I thought I knew everything about the making of Avatar.  I was wrong.

“He said that he wanted this special edition to literally have everything, so you don’t have to worry that if you buy this, another one will be released next year. It won’t happen.”

    is contradicted by this:

“Regarding the 16 minutes of finished deleted scenes from Avatar, he said they were finished in 3D so when they eventually release a 3D version, it’s ready to go.”

yeah…but how many of us own 3d TV’s? I meant another special edition Blu-ray

      • Anonymous

not trying to argue, but a 3D Special Edition is still another special edition that features something lacking from the original. As the 3D Blu Rays i have looked at in store (Cloudy w/ a Chance of Meatballs and Monster House) can both be viewed in 2D, wouldn’t a Special Edition that “Includes Everything” include the 3D version?

      • Brian Tipton

Yeah, exactly. I noticed that contradiction, even at a skim through. I’m not sure I understand why they wouldn’t just put the 3D version in this set and then wait for people’s home theater technology to catch up. Oh wait… money.

I have to at least somewhat agree with the Annoymous poster. I held out when the Theatrical 2D was released, knowing a special edition would come out. Now I see that Extended Edition about to drop tomorrow and Cameron says it will have “everything” and yet not 3D. The blu-ray 3D format requires 2D playability, so they could release an Extended version with both the 3D and 2D versions and it could sell just as much to the 2D crowd as the 3D. And I don’t care about their “there isn’t a market…yet” BS. Fox made straight up silly amounts of money on this film, if they have to eat just a little bit in adding 3D when not as many people have the 3DTVs yet well I don’t think it would break them, or significantly affect their profit. For that matter is it even that amazing that Fox fronted the $16million to add the 16 minutes anyway? What is $16 million to this franchise?

So–whiny rant aside–I guess I’m supposed to buy this 2D Extended version, and just sit and hope Fox deems this juggernaut of a franchise worthy of the cost of 3D blu-ray options. I guess they don’t feel at all obligated to just go ahead with 3D offernings even when many would argue Avatar’s popularity was in no small part fueled by its 3D imagery. It seems a bit ironic that some of what look to be very interesting extras are about a filming technology that I cannot appreciate unless I buy a specific brand of television, and then only one version of the film.

      Boo-urns.

Thanks for letting us see the entire video… You need to do this more often in the future. If you experience something neat like this let us see it too. The most frustrating thing when I go to websites is when they talk about how cool something was that they saw, and instead of letting us see a video of it, they either just write about it or edit it down a video which show hardly anything. The reason why I come to this website is because you are allowing your visitors to experience and see what you saw, and not just telling us about it. That is ONE big difference between you and other movie type websites. I hope you don’t change that. If anything the more video the better, let the viewer edit what he wants to see, but please don’t second guess what the audience would like to see. SHOW US EVERYTHING YOU CAN

    Thanks Again

I like watching making of stuff and this sounds like an amazing amount of content they’re putting in. The Blu-Con videos are cool too, but the begging of them are really hard to watch. That guy can’t speak for shit.

Always knew it was gonna be worth the wait, and I’m delighted I didn’t rush out and buy the bare bones issue in April. As for 3D, there seems to be only one director who has his finger on the pulse of this type of tec. His name is James Cameron.
