If there’s one thing people love, it’s getting career advice from their ex-spouse. James Cameron is an intelligent person so, naturally, he understands this lesser known fact of life. As such, in a print interview with EW, the highest-grossing filmmaker of all-time has a few words of wisdom for his ex-wife/Oscar winning director Kathryn Bigelow.
“I think [The Hurt Locker] would have been better in 3D. Absolutely. It wouldn’t have been hugely better in 3D, but I’m talking a future where you don’t have to put ‘in 3D’ on the movie poster anymore, the same way you don’t put ‘in color’ on posters anymore.”

While he mentions Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker, I think the key term in Cameron’s statement is “3D.” Considering his deep investment in developing 3D camera technology (the Fusion/Reality Camera System), it seems only natural that Cameron would look forward to the day when 3D would be the rule rather than the exception. In short, I take this as more of a promotion of the technology itself rather than a critique of Bigelow’s award-winning film.
As for his thoughts on Bigelow winning two Oscars for “Best Director” and “Best Picture”, Cameron tells EW:
“It was David and Goliath. Goliath had made more than a couple of billion dollars and ‘The Hurt Locker’ had made about what it cost to shoot, about $15 million. The Academy always likes to be the great equalizer. But I don’t begrudge her any of that. I couldn’t think of a better outcome for our lives. I got my Oscar. She got her Oscar.”
I’m going to leave that last statement for you to interpret. Oh, marriage… and divorce. (Wiping a tear from my eye) It really is a beautiful thing.

Lol, James Cameron is wrong I think. Unless 3D can actually reproduce reality it won't ever become the norm for all films, right now 3D is just a gimmick; a special effect. With the exception of Avatar I haven't seen a single film in 3D that improved it, the rest it was more a nuisance than anything else.

I like how James Cameron talks about 3D like he invented it last year. It's been around a while dude. It's never been the standard in the last 50 years and it never will be.
On a side note, I don't mind 3D. But it's only cool for like the first 5 minutes. After that your eyes adjust to the image and it doesn't even look 3D anymore.

I thought that both Coraline and How to Train Your Dragon benefitted a lot from the 3D. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that Coraline's use of 3D was more effective than Avatar's. In Coraline the 3D was used to emphasize the change between the real world and the other world and when watching it on a regular 2D display I feel like I'm missing part of the experience.
The 3D that Cameron speaks of is actually a new kind of 3D that hasn't been around too long, but has only been around for two years if I am not mistaken. I agree with James Cameron that 3D is the future and that people shouldn't complain as much as they do. Not every film in the future will have to be in 3D, just like not every film today has to be in color, but I can see a future where 3D is generally accepted.

James Cameron is entirely correct about how the Academy Award made their choice. If Avatar had been an indie film directed by Kathryn Bigelow in the present day based on a real man fighting a war to bring down a corporation it would have won all the big awards. Further Cameron is very gracious as he congratulated Kathryn Bigelow on her victory and he even said as a feminist he was delighted that a woman director finally won the Academy Award for Best Director. Not to mention Bigelow said her self that she counted her blessings of even being nominated and not no one can compete with James Cameron.

Am I alone in saying that I don't want 3D in my house?
I saw Avatar in a purpose built IMAX screen and it looked amazing (the story content is another debate), however the 3D is not going to be nearly as effective on a 40 inch screen in the corner of my room.
I live on the west coast of Scotland a full 65 miles from my nearest cinema (the IMAX is 100) so I have to choose my screenings carefully. Given Christopher Nolans comments on 3-D quality a few weeks back and the awful, awful content that Hollywood is currently spitting out 3D wise. i'm going to stake my claim and say “Get to fuck”.
James Cameron in my eyes is a film making God but his 3D comments wind me up, perhaps maybe in his £50 million paycheck world this is a very good idea but I just spent £500 on a brand new LCD 1080p screen so there will be no upgrade for me for another 5 ears.
If I want 3-d I will go outside. I like my movies the way they are on my TV not in my face. 3-d doesn't work for everything
