James Cameron’s “Avatar” now has a trailer. That’s right. You read that correctly. I never thought I would see the day but after months and months (and years) of waiting it is finally here. Did it live up to your expectations? Is your mind blown? Are you disappointed? Does this look even better than anything you expected? I’m very interested in reading what your thoughts are and I’m sure you will have some after you see the trailer when you hit the jump.

First, here’s the trailer. Thank you 20th Century Fox for releasing a copy on YouTube! For HD go to Apple.

Avatar Movie image Navi.jpgSo I’m in the same boat as a lot of you guys. This is my first time seeing any footage for the film since I wasn’t able to attend comic con this year. So, what do I think? I think it looks…not as amazing as I thought it would. It looks like a motion capture cartoon to me. I’ll admit that it looks like its going to be a fun and amazing time with some awesome visuals but I’m kind of blown away not by how great it looks but by how cartoony it is. I think I might have set my expectations too high.  I was interested in reading peoples reactions before but now after seeing the trailer a couple of times I am 10x more curious. Be sure to leave your thoughts and comments below.

For those of you who have been living under a rock for the past couple of years and want to know what this “Avatar” film is all about, here is a plot synopsis which also talks a bit about the technology that we can expect when the film comes out later on this year

“Avatar is the story of an ex-Marine who finds himself thrust into hostilities on an alien planet filled with exotic life forms. As an Avatar, a human mind in an alien body, he finds himself torn between two worlds, in a desperate fight for his own survival and that of the indigenous people. More than 10 years in the making, “Avatar” marks Cameron’s return to feature directing since helming 1997′s “Titanic,” the highest grossing film of all time and winner of 11 Oscars including best picture. WETA Digital, renowned for its work in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and “King Kong,” will incorporate new intuitive CGI technologies to transform the environments and characters into photorealistic 3-D imagery that will transport the audience into the alien world rich with imaginative vistas, creatures and characters.”

Also, for more on “Avatar”, you can read Matt’s report on the footage that was shown at comic con here. You can also see Steve’s interview with “Avatar” producer, John Landau, while you are at it here.

“Avatar” hits conventional, 3D, and 3D IMAX theatres on December 18th.

I actually agree. It looks like a ton of fun and the effects are cool but they are not what I expected. James Cameron has used the words “cutting edge” so much that they died of exhaustion and this merely looks like awesome animation. Maybe slightly better. I think filmmakers should make films and let others decide if it revolutionizes the industry. This doesn’t look like the future of film. That said it looks like a movie I’m looking forward to.

Watch it in HD at apple. It looks way way way better and actually close to photorealistic.

The problem is that James has created a world that we aren’t use to seeing hence it appears cartoon eventhough technically it is photoreal.

The reason why D9 cgi works is because it is set in a real world and we know how cities look.

Avatar is a totally different beast.

I say I love what I am seeing but I think expectations, hype was way too much. Hence people will be somewhat dissapointed.

Wow. I’m actually not very impressed. This doesn’t look a ton better than other CGI I’ve seen, and there wasn’t a moment where I didn’t know it was CGI I was looking at. Cameron shouldn’t have hyped this so much. I’m also not sure that a love story between two CGI alien people is going to grab audiences. And as the most expensive film of all time, this movie HAS to grab audiences and critics alike, or Cameron is in trouble.

Man, this makes all his excessive appearances so far kind of overkill. The movie looks like a video game. Here’s an article about the overhype of the movie.

Honestly, I think it was his 15 minute spiel at E3 that has really thrown me. I couldn’t believe he’d talk for all that time without even a screenshot. Too much word of mouth hype. Hopefully I’ll calm down before December.

James Cameron was there before. The most expensive movie of all time carried by a love story. Does this movie remembers you Titanic????? So I don’t think he is trouble because JC has a lot of fans and with the help of the 3D and Imax this movie is going to make a lot of movie.

      • Django @

Yeah, but Leonardo Dicaprio & Kate Winslet are a far cry from Blue Alien Elves with digital tears.

Maybe he’ll provide digital tears or hankies with our 3/D glasses.

        That’d be appropriate.

This doesn’t look that great to me. The CGI doesn’t seem that impressive. at least not the way they were hyping it to be. The story doesn’t seem that original. It appears to be “human goes undercover as alien species, falls in love with on of the aliens and must now choose a side”.

I don’t go with these people’s comment i liked it a lot and hoping that the story of the movie touches everybody .This will be big for sure but not as big as titanic in terms of box office. After long years james cameron still hasn’t lost his touch he seems to get better and better . It will be 3d ‘s coolest looking film where people will say 3d is not gimmick it’s actually good .I have my tickets for tommorows preview can’t wait to watch it in 3d imax not assholes like you who watched it on online trailer.I feel the buzz but not hype.

Lame. One of my favorite things about this trailer are the comments on the fanboy sites of the true believers. The prevailing opinion is that it looks like a cartoon; I think the Navi look like the offspring of JarJar and Cookie Monster. So these die hard fans (who really just want to be excited about something, anything) are screaming at the “haters” for not appreciating the genius of this mess. Really amusing.

The other thing I love is how District 9 has, over night, made everyone cost conscious about bloated hollywood garbage. With good reason – what was Cameron thinking spending this ridiculous amount of money on these ugly and fake looking creatures and landscapes. (I love the guys who reply – it is a world we aren’t use to seeing, that is why it looks fake. Right – I’ll adjust my eyes.) There is no doubt in my mind that the FX in D9 will outshine Avatar. The prawn and their gear are fascinating because they are believable. These Navi things on the other hand…

    • joe @

District 9 effects were good but onces avatar comes out and people watch it in 3d not like you in 2d theywill stop complaning about these characters and will get interested in story .And District 9 effects is no way near what this movie has achieved .If you want to watch in 3d then watch it otherwise go to hell like other suckers.Wait till you watch the full movie in 3d and then judge it and lot of time is left for the whole movie to come out and the effects have to be rendered so the final product is not out yet.

    • Rafi @

This movie is made for the 3D for the most part and I bet in the giant movie screen is going to look better and fun to watch. This is not the final product yet, watch the movie first and then I completly judge. What you people care about Cameron spending all this mney in the movie when he probably is taking a bath with the 1,800 millions Titanic made in 1997.

First off, I’m a huge Cameron fan. He’s done some of my favorite movies of all time and I really want Avatar to kick ass. I’d love to see a real, honest- to- God “game changer”. That said…

This looks like a Zemeckis, CGI cartoon version of Last of the Mohicans, with aliens, instead of Native Americans. I work as a concept artist and main the thing that’s nagging me is how many many visual/ design elements there are where the lineage is far too obvious; especially from someone of Cameron’s stature: mechs from The Matrix sequels, alien critters and landscapes from the Star Wars prequels, and the Roger Dean- esque floating islands look like something from an old Yes album cover. The design of the alien race just seems very cartoony and obvious- pick up any D&D sourcebook. It all just seems too familiar, especially considering how ‘revolutionary’ it’s all supposed to be. Very ‘video- gamey’, and not in a good way.

Just a first impression from the trailer. I’m going tomorrow to see the fifteen minute preview in 3D in IMAX, and I’m really, really hoping that it’s as amazing as I heard the SDCC presentation was. I have to admit though, D9 seemed much more compelling, and at one tenth the budget.

There we go – that is what I love, nerd hate. “otherwise go to hell like other suckers”. Go to hell? Really? Because I, like the vast majority of those who have seen what I’ve seen, don’t like the trailer to your little sci fi movie? Be honest dude, you have yourself all in a twist because, as many have pointed out, it looks like Fern Gully. I haven’t heard any critics I trust who saw the Comic Con footage say that it was really stunning, though I’ve read several who said that it was a disappointment.
Now, if you worked on the making of the film, I could understand your taking the criticism personally and having a little fit, but I really doubt that is what is happening here. I think you are just a cranky geek who has been waiting on this movie for a little too long. It is sad when those we admire let us down, isn’t it? All those fun times at the moving picture shows with Mr. Cameron…go have some cookies and take a nap – that’ll make it better.

Also, RockLobster, D9 was amazingly realistic, at any budget. You can contend that those big blue anime cat things with the pointy ears and mullet hair cuts look more lifelike than the prawn all you want, but you will be in the very narrow minority (and you’ll know it isn’t true).

I’d like to see James Cameron re-make District 9. CGI and 3D IMAX!

    • Django @

Judging from Cameron’s attitude toward unions in the film industry, I can’t imagine Cameron coming anywhere close to a Third World country, and getting close enough to actually interview people.

Here’s something interesting I just learned about D9:
Those documentary interviews with citizens, asking about the aliens?

THEY WERE ASKING THEM QUESTIONS ABOUT THE NIGERIAN REFUGEE CAMPS, AND SUBSTITUTED ALIENS TO BRING ATTENTION TO WHAT’S REALLY GOING ON DOWN THERE.

James Cameron – as evidence by his $240 million Video Game here – is in no way capable of making something as relevant, immediate and fresh as District 9.

Welcome to the Revolutionized world of the new Sci Fi. Not spear-headed by AVATAR.

But by the underdog: Niell Blomkoff.

(Just think about what those people said about their fellow human beings, and realize that, unlike the Prawns – those refugees aren’t getting on any ship to remove themselves. They’re unwelcome. They’re mistreated. They’re HUMAN. And they’re REAL.)

Use your $240 million to save some villages, dude. Or make 10 relevant films instead of THIS crap.

I agree with the detractors. The trailer looked like it borrowed from every other sci-fi movie. I felt like I was watching a video game commericial on a kid’s network. Not impressed. Also, here’s another bleeding-heart story about the industrialists trying to overpower the naturalists (like when the the Europeans came to the Americas??). Good grief. I’m actually disappointed in myself for getting caught up in the hype this past year.

Another turn off here is that the movie takes this incredibly preachy tone (based on what I have read of the story) even as it is wasting hundred of millions creating another piece of mass marketed, prefab junk. How many microloans could have been made? How many trees planted? Actually, forget that – how many D9′s could have been made? Who wouldn’t rather see 10 bold, original new movies by fresh talent over the last of the blue mohicans in space?

No not at all district 9 is now way near avatar in 3d. Watch both the movies in 3d and then tell which is good that’s how it should be compared then people won’t be harsh on avatar.Wait till avatar comes out people will forget District9 and will appreciate it’s character’s and the story of avatar i think it ‘s too early to compare one which is released and one which 4 months to go it’s just stupidity.

I love how quickly everyone is to judge a movie that out of all people JAMES CAMERON is making. So what if the CGI looks a little funky right now? Does that make it a terrible movie that 20th Century Fox wasted their money on? Hell No. Because quite frankly the same type of pessimism was around near the release of Titanic and look how that turned out. The bitchy fanboys were completely wrong about it then, give it a chance now. It’s not like this guy has ever failed at anything before.

I agree that the CGI is disappointing but only because it was hyped up so much I think. If it hadnt been hyped as much as it was, I might be more impressed.

Part of me agrees that this shouldnt be dismissed so easily simply because its James Cameron and Cameron seems to have the midas touch, but another part of me is nagging that this may be Cameron’s Phantom Menace: where a once great filmaker gets drunk on technology and the overuse of CGI at the expense of a characters and story.

But I’ll keep the faith until I actually see it … which I will as soon as its released.

Listen guys. This movie is going to blow people away on the big screen. A little 3×4 window on your computer isnt going to be nearly as impressive or realistic. Reserve judgment until you see it in December or if you are lucky enough to have tickets for the preview…tonight. I want to read what the people who see it in 3d tonight have to say.

I liked this movie the first time I saw it… Back when it was called Aliens/Dances with Wolves/ The Jar Jar and the Gungans vs Droid Scene from The Phantom Menace. The movement in the CGI was jerky and the texture reminded me of Ang Lee’s Hulk.

I am neither a “hater” nor a fanboy. I was initially not pleased with the CGI in the preview. However, I have side by side monitors at work so I decided to watch the full HD version of the trailer as it payed out across the two screens. That was the moment I began to appreciate the quality of the effects.

The next night I went to the special 16 minute preview and pretty much blown away. The effects were truly impressive on the big screen. The 3D was the real story, however. For those that have not seen the 3D you will be in for a real treat. It was like nothing I could have imagined. I had a very distinct physiological reaction to the footage. My heart raced and my mind became disoriented at times. It took some getting used to, but the 3D is so immersive it actually tricks your mind to some degree. I know it wasn’t just me because my friend sitting next to me had the same reaction. Did anyone else experience this?

If you have only seen the trailer for Avatar online, you have barely scratched the surface of the visual experience that the movie will have to offer. I include in this statement, the Apple 1080p high-def online view, which is much more photo-realistic than the lower-definition online trailers. I was not at comic.con, so I don’t know the experience that people had there, with their 25-minute preview (or whether it was shown in digital 3-D), but I was one of the fortunate ones who got to see the 16-minute preview in digital IMAX 3-D on August 21st. My first statement would be to paraphrase Dr. Morbius in “Forbidden Planet”, when he was about to show the subterranean wonders of the Krell to Commander Adams and Lt. “Doc” Ostrow: “Prepare your minds for a new scale of physical ‘and visual cinematic’ [scientific] values, gentlemen (and ladies).” My second statement would be to compare my reaction to the 16-min. dig. Imax 3-D trailer for Avatar, to the only other trailer that I can remember ever having such an impact on me, and that was my first viewing of the theatrical trailer for the original “Star Wars”, approximately 32 years ago: “Oh my g-d, they’re going to have all of those special effects (and scenes) in one movie?!! It looks like an amazing story…and this is going to take cinematic special effects values to a whole new level!” To expand on what Gus had to say in the previous reply, I will give my testimonial validation to what James Cameron, himself, had to say about his use of the 3-D process in a terrific, detailed interview with Variety (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117983864.html?categoryid= 1009&cs=1) on Apr. 10 2008: “A 3-D film immerses you in the scene, with a greatly enhanced sense of physical presence and participation.” As evidenced by the scenes in the 3-D Avatar trailer, James Cameron uses the 3-D to immerse you in the scene, and to give you an enhanced sense of realism, not as a gimmick to throw things at you, off-screen, as many current 3-D films do. Cameron has said that all of his future movies will be in 3-D. I believe that after Avatar, many more adventure and other types of films, will be filmed in 3-D. From what I saw in those 16 minutes, I would say that Avatar will be comparable in its’ comparison to current special effects values, to what the first “Star Wars” was, to prior special effects values, when it came out in 1977. When you add in James Cameron’s imagination, his consistent track record of success in creating movie magic, his ability to capture our attention for every moment of a movie, and his ability to tell an exciting, fun, complex, mature, and thought-provoking story in a way that’s rarely or never been done before (think: the Terminator films I & II, Aliens, The Abyss, True Lies, and Titanic), I have trouble seeing how anyone can doubt that Avatar is going to be an amazing movie experience. I could easily count on one hand, how many movies I have ever felt compelled to see more than once during their initial theatrical run; I feel quite confident that Avatar will be added to that very short list.
