Director James Mangold (Walk the Line, the upcoming action-comedy Knight and Day) is circling the upcoming Joe Namath biopic. Appropriately entitled Namath, the film is set to star Jake Gyllenhaal as the football legend. Of course, we reported Gyllenhaal’s casting back in November 2007 soooo the project’s been slightly dormant for a while. In their report, Pajiba notes that Mangold has nothing set up after Knight and Day and Gyllenhaal has nothing set up after Duncan Jones’ Source Code so the timing may be right for the director and actor. However, both are attached to other projects with Mangold on a feature adaptation of Murderball and a Dusty Springfield biopic while Gyllenhaal is on board for the remake of Damn Yankees.
The reason “Broadway” Joe Namath is considered biopic-worthy is that he’s considered the first “rock star” of professional football. This is back in the days before football players would accidentally shoot themselves at a nightclub or obnoxiously change their last name to match their jersey number.
