Fox and Hugh Jackman Want James Mangold to Direct THE WOLVERINE

Many readers of the site checked out of The Wolverine at the same time Darren Aronofsky did.  It’s difficult to stay rational in the bold awfulness of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, so I understand why so many forget that Wolverine is a damn cool character, Hugh Jackman owns the performance, and Aronofsky is not the only director who can deliver a good Wolverine movie.  And I think Fox proved earlier this month with X-Men: First Class that they’re back on track with the comic book property.  A shortlist popped up in May with eight possible Aronofsky replacements, Adam singled out James Mangold (Knight and Day) as a promising candidate, a recommendation I co-sign.  More importantly, though, Mangold is the first choice of Jackman and Fox to direct The Wolverine according to Deadline.  Deadline suggests “negotiations are about to get underway,” but Variety reports the hire more officially, so expect Mangold to stick.  I like this.  I understand if you don’t, but if so, I ask that you express your discontent thoughtfully.

The script for The Wolverine comes from Christopher McQuarrie (Valkyrie), and sets the bulk of the story in Japan.  Production is tentatively scheduled for the fall.

Great choice. Although I’m not a fan of “Knight and Day” or “kate and Leopold”, Mangold’s resume is really good and pretty eclectic. He has shown he can direct action scenes rather well and the actors he works with usually turn in some of their best performances. Reese Witherspoon and Angelina Jolie won oscars with roles in films he directed. I know it doesn’t seem that impressive considering how talented those actresses are but he did coax a remarkable performance out of Sly Stallone in “Copland”.

I’m more interested in the movie now then when Aronfsky was attached. Before you guys lose your shit, think about it for a second. Yes, Aronofsky is a great filmmaker. And yes Mangold can’t hold his jock (to steal a line from “Do The Right Thing”) when it comes to film making. But what has Aronofsky done that would give anyone the slightest bit of confidence he could handle a large scale, action heavy comic book movie. Maybe there’s a reason he keeps pulling out of all these genre movies he attaches himself to.

Compare the two resumes and be honest about it, who seems better suited for directing a Wolverine movie?

because hiring an action director to do an action pictures is too easy. hiring a great director to do something he has never done before is much more interesting. it can go wrong, like Ang Lee in Hulk, or Marc Foster(not a great director, but a good one) in Quantum of Solace. but Aronofsky is just too good of a director to miss this one. He’s in his peak right now, and he has shown how to adapt to a material to make the film better. The Wrestler called for a departure in style, and he did.

Nolan did an action picture when his credits include Memento and Insomnia
      Fincher did a facebook movie
Paul Thomas Anderson did a film about an oildman that is set in the early part of the century

all of this directors does not seem fit for the material. but great directors know how to make a great film, even if they haven’t made that kind of film before.

the joy would have been that we wouldn’t know what to expect from a Wolverine directed by Aronofsky, only that it would be great. sadly, we will never see it.

I agree and disagree with u DanielPlainView.

AGREE: Yes it is conventional and usual to pick and action director for an action movie. But James Mangold is a versatile director. Kind of like how u mentioned David Fincher & Christopher Nolan. David Fincher has a range on his resume. Panic Room to The Social Network, Fight Club to Zodiac, Seven to Alien 3 (i kno, i kno, it’s still part of his filmography). Aronofsky isn’t to good for Wolverine, its just out of his range right now.

I am sorta skeptical with Mangold but he is a decent choice. It seems im 1 of the few who thought Knight & Day was wonderful. I always praise the movie for its breezy & refreshing pace plus the way he shot the action sequences really impressed me.

Therefore, it was Aronofsky who pulled out of the project probably for the reason that J.J. just stated. He isn’t at his peak yet, he’s just started to rise up.

We’ll c what kind of vision James Mangold has.

What irks me about this debacle is Aronofsky wanted to do something very special with Wolverine and take him back to his savage, R-rated roots. As Fux, sorry, FOX will be constantly intefering with the production, expect this to be PG-13 shit as usual. Fox are all about the talking, but rarely deliver. I can’t see Mangold being any better to be honest. Matt Reeves would be a good choice IMHO.

I had hopes for Aronofsky doing this because he knows how to put some dark self loathing sh!t on screen. That is exactly what wolverine needs to be in a dark world and to be taken seriously. This shouldn’t be a family fun movie it needs to be barely PG-13 more towards R. As for Jackman, he does a pretty good job but he would not be my first choice if they were to reboot. I’d actually love to see Tom Hardy play the part. After seeing him in Bronson and the new photo as Bane for DKR I think he would own the role of Wolverine. Besides Jackman is about a foot taller than how wolverine is depicted.

I hope Mangold makes The Wolverine a very good movie becasue XMO:W was awful with the characters and the timeline, it is a prequel so it should been based in the old days.

I blame the script so just Fox gets this right.

X-Men: First Class was the best comic book movie of the summer so far.
