Opening this weekend is writer-director-cinematographer Sean Ellis’ Anthropoid. The film is based on the extraordinary true story of “Operation Anthropoid,” the code name for the mission to assassinate SS officer Reinhard Heydrich during World War II. If you’re not familiar with the awful human being named Reinhard Heydrich, he was the main architect behind the Final Solution and the third in command behind Hitler and Himmler and the leader of Nazi forces in Czechoslovakia.

The film follows two soldiers from the Czechoslovakian army-in-exile, Josef Gabčík (Cillian Murphy) and Jan Kubiš (Jamie Dornan), who parachute into Prague to assassinate Heydrich and must deal with the challenge of pulling of the difficult mission with the city under lock down and limited resources and assistance. Shot in some of the actual locations where the real events took place, Anthropoid is an extremely well made film that brings to light another incredible World War II story that most don’t know about. The film also stars Charlotte Le BonAnna GeislerováHarry Lloyd Alena MihulováMarcin DorocińskiBill MilnerSam Keeley, Jiří ŠimekMish BoykoVáclav NeužilAndrej Polák and Toby Jones.

I recently interviewed Jamie Dornan and Cillian Murphy about their experience working on the film. They talked about balancing fact and fiction when making a movie about true events, how Sean Ellis not only wrote and directed the film but was also the director of photography, what surprised them about the story, and more. Check out what they had to say in the video above and below you can watch the trailer.
