We’ve got a few casting stories to attend to this evening.  Briefly:

  • Jamie Foxx and Benicio Del Toro will star in Spring Breakers director Harmony Korine’s next film The Trap.
  • Before leading Marvel’s Black Panther, actor Chadwick Boseman will first star in the thriller Message from the King.
  • Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) and Cherry Jones (24) have joined the Hank Williams biopic I Saw the Light, starring Tom Hiddleston.

More on the aforementioned casting after the jump.

the-trap-jamie-foxxPer Variety, Jamie Foxx will lead director Harmony Korine’s Spring Breakers follow-up, the ensemble gangster drama The Trap, with THR adding that Benicio Del Toro will also star.  The film is described as a “revenge pic” and follows two childhood friends now in their late 30s: one very businessman, and the other having spent his adult life in jail.  On the day of a big recognition for the successful man, the other is released from prison and determined to get even.  The picture will shoot early next year in Miami.  Korine wrote the screenplay and will direct.  This marks a curious choice of project for Foxx, who has been keeping things light recently with turns in films like The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and the upcoming Annie.

Additionally, eOne announced today that 42 and Get on Up star Chadwick Boseman will lead the thriller Message from the King.  The story takes place in the underbelly of present day Los Angeles and revolves around a man who arrives in the city from South Africa with a few hundred dollars in his pocket and the intention of finding his younger sister.  Within 24 hours, he discovers that she’s been brutally murdered, and the film follows the events that take place in the following six days.  Fabrice Du Welz (Alleluia) will direct, and filming is set to begin in February in Los Angeles.  Boseman will then report to the set of Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War, in which he makes his debut as the comics character Black Panther.  He’ll then topline his own Marvel movie, Black Panther, for release on November 3, 2017.

Finally, it was announced that Bradley Whitford and Cherry Jones have joined the cast of director Marc Abraham’s biopic of country music singer Hank Williams, I Saw the Light.  Tom Hiddleston is already set to lead the picture as Williams, and Whitford has been set to play Nashville music publisher Fred Rose, who helped guide Williams’ career.  Jones, meanwhile, will play Williams’ mother.  Elizabeth Olsen co-stars.
