Rumor: Jamie Foxx Lands Lead in Quentin Tarantino’s DJANGO UNCHAINED?

     June 22, 2011

In this day and age, the multitude of news sources has extended into social media. While Twitter isn’t necessarily the most solid of places to grab news, the credibility of the tweeter (is that the right word? surely not.) must be taken into account. The script for Quentin Tarantino’s new film Django Unchained can be mildly described as controversial. It’s set in the 19th century United States and the lead character is a freed slave. While the role of Django was apparently written for and offered to Will Smith, the ever-image conscious actor seems to have passed and now we’re hearing Jamie Foxx has landed the role. Last night, Jeff Goldsmith tweeted:

“Will Smith is out! Inside sources tell me that Tarantino has chosen Oscar winner @iamjamiefoxx to play Django!”

Now normally this would be taken with a grain of salt, but Goldsmith was also the first to break the news of Leonardo DiCaprio taking on the villain role in the film. While nothing’s confirmed, it could very well be possible that Foxx is now Tarantino’s Django. Hit the jump for more on Django Unchained.

quentin-tarantino-imageTarantino’s cast now includes DiCaprio as the villain Calvin Candie, Christoph Waltz and Samuel L. Jackson. The story centers on a freed slave who is taught the tricks of the trade by a German bounty hunter (Waltz) in order to liberate his wife from an evil plantation owner (DiCaprio).

When it looked like Smith might not be so keen to take on the role of Django, a few other names started popping up: Jamie Foxx, Idris Elba and Chris Tucker. Of the three, I think Foxx is a fine choice, though I would love to see Smith take on a role as ballsy as this. The actor hasn’t really done anything surprising or interesting in quite a while, and he’s definitely go the acting chops to pull it off. Furthermore, this sounds like a role that Elba could knock out of the park. Nevertheless, Foxx isn’t a bad alternate.

If this news turns out to be true, and Tarantino has his star, expect more casting news soon as he works to fill out the rest of his cast before production picks up. Django Unchained is set to hit theaters December 25th, 2012.

I hate Will Smith, didn’t always but due to his past work and the pushing of his talentless kids on the industry I hate him. I’m so glad he didn’t get this role, now come awards season when whomever gets the role is collecting there Oscar…Smith will be sitting there dumbfounded for the second time (he passed on the role of Neo if I recall correctly). What an asshole

I so wish Elba would’ve agreed to doing this. I just saw he signed on for Pacific Rim and I’m pretty bummed. I don’t like any of the names previously mentioned except Idris. Jamie Foxx just doesn’t have that vengeance character ability to me. Chris Tucker would be horrid in that role and Will Smith is just…. all I think about is Wild Wild West and it irks me. I read the script and I don’t see anyone listed here doing the lead role of Django justice besides Elba.

I just want, whoever it is, to be confirmed.

Michael K Williams (Omar from the Wire) would be a inspired choice.

I know he’s too old but Wendell Pierce would bring it in this role too. Love Idris though. Also Omar from The Wire would be great as would Avon Barksdale or any of the bruthas from The Wire for that matter.

  • Hello

If you’re up there Quentin, please pick anybody but Foxx

Yes! Any of these leads sound great to me. But the main thing is – another Tarantino movie!!! lol – I say that everything Quentin directs is a masterpiece, and I always consider it a real gift when he puts out a new picture. I’m just happy now that I won’t have to wait much longer. Only a year and a half away. I can definitely deal with that. Thanks for your brilliance, Quentin – can’t wait.
