Revisionist Western JANE GOT A GUN Set for August 29, 2014; Stars Natalie Portman, Joel Edgerton, and Ewan McGregor

     November 25, 2013

For cinephiles, the behind-the-scenes drama on the revisionist western Jane Got a Gun will overshadow the film until at least the first trailer.  Natalie Portman stars as a woman who must call on an ex-lover to help defend her farm and injured outlaw husband from the husband’s gang.  Michael Fassbender was going to play the ex-lover and Joel Edgerton was to play the gang leader.  Then Fassbender left because of a scheduling conflict, Edgerton moved to the ex-lover role, and Jude Law signed on to play the villain.  Then matters got crazier when director Lynne Ramsay (We Need to Talk about Kevin) unexpectedly dropped out on the first day of shooting, and the production scrambled for a replacement.  They got Gavin O’Connor (Warrior), but then Law left because he wanted to work with Ramsay.  Bradley Cooper came on to play the villain, then he left, and finally the production landed on Ewan McGregor.

It’s impressive that the production survived all of this hullaballoo, and The Wrap reports the movie will be released on August 29, 2014.  The light competition is the horror film Jessabelle, and the thriller The Loft, which has been on the shelf for well over a year.

FINALLY! Is this the most production-plagued movie of the 21st Century?

  • The Flobbit

Also, WHY Ewan MacGregor? Fassbender and Law are far more charismatic. Is it just me?

I’m kind of amazed you could get the names and who left and who replaced them from the article without understanding the reasons they happened. It’s pretty much all intertwined. Maybe a second read will help you out. :P

Sounds like a sure deal of a movie and Warrior was quite good. Looking forward to it.

I get it, I get it. Fassbender was too busy, and Law wanted to work with Ramsay. Actors are shallow people…

Was there ever any closure on this Lynne Ramsey ordeal? I remember waiting for more details to arise about why she just suddenly dropped-out, but I don’t believe any explanation ever arose. It’s already pretty shocking for a director to just bail on the first day of shooting, it’s even stranger that the whole issue was just sort of dropped quietly without any reasoning. Is Ramsey holed-up in a cave or something?

    • The Flobbit

No, but she is just incredibly rude and arrogant. Law, Portman, Edgerton… everyone turned up on set, down to the makeup guys and the grip boys. And she never showed. The ego and GALL of that person. Zero respect for her now.
