A few new clips from Jason Bourne have been released online, giving us a closer look at the highly anticipated sequel that many thought would never come. Indeed, after the terrific The Bourne Ultimatum, director Paul Greengrass and star Matt Damon maintained that they were done with the franchise. Greengrass admitted he was a bit burnt out after contentious productions with the studio, and Damon stood firm in his reluctance to ever return to the franchise without Greengrass. Universal forged ahead with a backup plan that gave us the dull and stagnant The Bourne Legacy, but then as Universal was finally moving forward with plans for a Legacy sequel to be directed by Fast & Furious helmer Justin Lin, Greengrass and Damon suddenly had a desire to resurrect the character Jason Bourne with a new film.

The result is Jason Bourne, a picture that saw Damon officially working as a screenwriter alongside Greengrass and Christopher Rouse as the scripts for Ultimatum and Supremacy were largely finalized on set in the midst of filming. Damon doesn’t have a final screenwriting credit on Jason Bourne, but it’s clear he’s more than happy to be back in the saddle with a story that finds the titular assassin navigating a post-Edward Snowden world.

While blockbuster sequels are a dime a dozen, what makes Jason Bourne unique is A. It wasn’t rushed to production as a corporate-mandated cash-grab and B. Greengrass is one of the most exciting filmmakers working today. These new clips focus mostly on the action, which looks top notch, but I’m mighty eager to see what the thematic meat of the film is once it hits theaters later this month.

Check out the new Jason Bourne clips below. The film also stars Julia Stiles, Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel, Tommy Lee Jones, Riz Ahmed, and Ato Essandoh. Jason Bourne opens in theaters on July 29th.

Here’s the official synopsis for Jason Bourne:

Matt Damon returns to his most iconic role in Jason Bourne. Paul Greengrass, the director of The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum, once again joins Damon for the next chapter of Universal Pictures’ Bourne franchise, which finds the CIA’s most lethal former operative drawn out of the shadows.

For Jason Bourne, Damon is joined by Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel and Tommy Lee Jones, while Julia Stiles reprises her role in the series. Frank Marshall again produces alongside Jeffrey Weiner for Captivate Entertainment, and Greengrass, Damon, Gregory Goodman and Ben Smith also produce. Based on characters created by Robert Ludlum, the film is written by Greengrass and Christopher Rouse.
