Jason Reitman to Play Doctor to BURT WONDERSTONE Script Starring Steve Carell

     June 16, 2011

If you are going to have someone touch up your script, Oscar-nominated writer/director Jason Reitman (Up In The Air) isn’t a bad choice. While he is busy working on his next film, New Line has tapped Reitman to tweak the script for Burt Wonderstone starring Steve Carell. THR notes that Reitman has been hired for “several weeks’ worth of work,” though it’s unknown if it is just a touch up or complete overhaul. I guess it really comes down to what you think “several” means in this case, and how much time Reitman gives to the film. The film follows Carell, a traditional magician in Las Vegas that loses his partner and has to compete with a younger, hipper magician. For more on Burt Wonderstone and what Reitman currently has on his plate, hit the jump.

As THR points out, this is the first time Reitman has worked on a film he won’t be directing. He is reportedly keen on working on an “A-list comedy” like this. Getting paid for touching up a script seems like a pretty nice gig. If the film turns out poorly, most will likely say that he did what he could. If it turns out to be a hit, it could further elevate Reitman and give him more leeway with studios in the future. Even Oscar-nominated writer/directors need more leeway with studios these days. Reitman will be working off of a script by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (Horrible Bosses). Charles McDougall was originally set to direct the comedy, but Don Scardino was tapped earlier this month to replace him.

Scardino seems to be a nice choice as he currently serves as one of the main directors on NBC’s 30 Rock with over 30 episodes under his belt. With production set to begin in the fall, they have plenty of time to iron out some wrinkles and get the rest of the cast in place. Meanwhile, Reitman is casting his next film, Labor Day — Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin are set to star. Reitman is also finishing up on Young Adult, which stars Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson, and Patton Oswalt. The film is the second collaboration with Oscar-winning Juno scribe Diablo Cody and is set to land in the fall with Paramount distributing.
