Jason Statham on the Possibility of CRANK 3 and the Status of THE EXPENDABLES 2

Earlier today I got to interview Jason Statham as CBS Films is junketing his next movie The Mechanic (which is a welcome addition to Statham’s ass kicking resume) here in Los Angeles.  As a fan of his work over the past decade, it was really cool to finally ask him some questions about how he chooses his projects and just to hear him talk about making movies.  And while I’ll have the entire conversation online the week of release (January 28), I wanted to post two highlights tonight: what he said about Sylvester Stallone’s The Expendables 2 and if he thinks a Crank 3 will ever happen.  Hit the jump for what he had to say:

jason_statham_01If you’re a fan of Crank and Crank: High Voltage, Statham doesn’t sound confident that we’re going to see a Crank 3 as the second one didn’t do as well as the first one.  He said:

“It’s a shame the last one didn’t do that well. I think the first one had a little bit more success and usually if you do a sequel, it usually has to in some ways take a little bit more money than the first one.”

As a huge fan of the first two Crank films, I’d love to see a third film.  But if they don’t make another Crank, perhaps Neveldine/Taylor and Statham can create a new character…

But while we are probably not going to get another sequel to Crank, Statham sounded very confident that The Expendables 2 is going to move forward much sooner than many thought.  When I asked him what he’s getting ready to film this year, he told me this is the first time he has nothing scheduled in years.  I then asked if Expendables 2 is what he was waiting on.  He said yes.

While I was unsure that The Expendables 2 would move forward that fast, Statham said, “I’m very positive that it will be going.”

Of course, who really knows what’s up with The Expendables 2, but with Statham one of the stars of the franchise, since he hasn’t booked another gig, perhaps the movie is going to be filming much sooner than we all thought.

Here’s the part of the roundtable interview that covered Crank and Expenables.  More with Statham soon.

-

Collider: I’m a big fan of your pairings with Neveldine/Taylor, I’m curious, when you think of the Crank movies, what’s the first thing that comes to your head and do you ever think there’ll be a third?

Jason Statham: It’s a shame the last one didn’t do that well. I think the first one had a little bit more success and usually if you do a sequel, it usually has to in some ways take a little bit more money than the first one.

Well the second one is just balls up crazy.

Statham: Yeah, it was absolutely nuts, which reflects exactly who those two are. I don’t know, whether we’ll do another one? Who knows? I just know we had a great…working with those two guys is not like working with anybody else. I mean, they are absolutely mad as hatters. And Neveldine, moved to the country not so long ago, and has been living a different kind of life. I don’t know how plugged in he is to doing a third one.

Well they’re directing Ghost Rider 2 right now, so they’re clearly back in the game.

Statham: We’re always in touch. We always mention the idea of, shall we do another one, I don’t know.

Have you heard about a sequel to The Expendables?

Statham: Yes I have heard about a sequel and I’d be the first to say yes to a phone call from Sly. I mean, we spoke about it as soon as the movie started to do really well and he says, you know, it would be great to do this again, and if there’s anyone who can do a good sequel it’s Sly Stallone! He’s done a fair amount. Yeah, we had a good time. It’s something I’d like to repeat.

How far out do you plan for your career?  Are you thinking, I’ve got films lined up all in 2011, I’ve got four things, or are you sort of like, I take one project at a time and that’s as far as I’m going to look?

Statham: Sometimes you can get kind of chopped up with it. This is the first period in several years now that for the next few months I’m not doing anything. Normally come January the last three years, I’ve always had something in front of me. The trouble is, once you sign on to do a movie, there’s always an aspect of that, that you might miss something else, so.. The most I’ve had is a couple of movies in front of me, but now I’m just waiting for Stallone’s next film, The Expendables 2.

There’s been a lot of conjecture that, ‘it’s definitely going, that it might be going’…

Statham: It’s more than likely, yeah. I’m very positive that it will be going.

Oh, so this is what you’re waiting on.

Statham: Yes. Right now.

I love Jason Statham! Thanks to Guy Ritchie, we can watch him in greats like Lock, Stock, & Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch! He is definately a character actor at this point. He takes roles in action films because he uniquely talented in martial arts and stunt work.

Wow, this kind of stuff makes us muslims look bad. That and what the guy above said. haha

      More to the point…
Jason is near perfection! Everything he’s made is wonderful except for a few films (In the Name of the King).

I can honestly live without a Crank 3, I guess, if it means we’ll definitely be seeing an Expendables sequel. I’d love to see how Sly tops the first one!

Love Crank 1 to pieces, but Crank 2 kinda lost it for me when they had someone cut of their own nipples – I mean, wtf was that all about. Also thought Transporter 1+2 were most excellent though I do wish they’d kept in the missle tray deflection (unbelievable and impossible it may have been, but uber ‘king cool definately) but No3, oh dear.. oh deary me :(

I liked CRANK so much that I bought the CRANK2 dvd without ever seeing it. It was a spectacle of monumental retardation. Yeah, leave CRANK 3 alone. Anyone want a free dvd? But be warned; Ping Pong is in it, or whatever her name is.

  • Gfx

Will definitely see an Expendables 2.
Another Crank? Probably not. They kinda sucked.
The first Transporter was excellent. But then they just got progressively worse.
Stick to what you’re good at. And We’ll keep coming back for more.
    But PLEASE don’t do a lame-a$$ 3-D movie.

  • FScott

The Crank movies sucked Gfx? I recommend you rewatch them a few times with an eye on directorial tricks and hidden jokes. But, then again if you liked Expendables then perhaps complexity is not something you seek in enterainment. Fair enough. But, I hate you.

Oh wow we get a sequel to expendables…whoopdeedoo that movie blew.

I think the second half of it had maybe two lines of dialogue in between gay-ass things-blowing-up in cgi. I don’t even think that kind of crap excites 12 year olds these days.

It is such a shame that the IQ of this country is so low.

    • Kraft

And you sure are just a douche!

      • AssKickAGram

All he’s doing is telling the truth. Where the Expendables fail is the plot and the characters. Plot: Sucked Ass. Characters: Too Many To Count.
        Fuck You.
        Sincerely,
        Wade

Huge Man-crush for the Stath! Crank 1 is one of my all time action flicks(soundtrack was PERFECT for that movie). 2 was lacking. Transporter 3 was the best in my opinion of that franchise although T1 had that killer bus fight seq. Great fight seq. Heard they patented a new camera for Crank 3D and was up for it. EXPENDABLES 2 better be written by other than Sly. Either way long live the Stath!!!!!

  • Andrw

I couldnt stand The Expendables, but the Cranks are awesome.

Crank 1 in particular was such a cool concept
number 2 was a little bit ridiculous…. but i still thought it was awesome
interesting how they could keep the story going
specially as he basically dies at the end of the first one..

its like Grand Theft Auto on steroids, and as a movie.

    fuck expendables.
it was a collection of everything i find lame, dumb and cheesy in an old school american action film.

I thought the cranks are awesome and think they should make a crank 3 but base it on when chev is a young kid or teenager.

    • Charles

or you could just have it pick up after the ending of the second, as if he could survive the first movie…

  • TN

I like jason statham and almost his movies including Crank and High Voltage but there are pornographic scenes which is forbidden for a great actor like you;; and finally i hope you’ll create a fantastic Crank 3 better than the first ones!!!!!

  • Trev-O

have to admit the crank films were cool! different & smart, yes they were farfetched but very watchable.
the expendables was crap! biggest load of cliche ever with crap dialogue and a worse story.

  • MonstaBoobMan

Crank 1 and 2 were borderline genius. Crank 2 even more bonkers mental hilarity pumped full of adrenaline – perhaps the best ever films in the genre. And Statham is The Man – Sly, Willis and Arnold are all nonces.

Jason Statham your one of the best action stars and Crank and Transporter sequels were awesome many people think the second movie to most sequel movies never do well but at least Crank 2 did have the continuation story to the first movie compared to other movies its just a matter of time and thought on how to come up with another continuation to the 3rd and final Crank at least give it a better part like your character Chev Chelios he will get his heart back but he goes through complications trying to get it back as it ends he gets his heart back and gets his life back that should be how the movie should end

  • Gregory Tennant

I watched both movies and I would love to see a CRANK 3. CRANK 2 was just as good as 1.
