With director Dennis Gansel’s Mechanic: Resurrection opening this weekend, I was able to land an exclusive interview with Jason Statham. He talked about getting to film in Thailand, working with Vic Armstrong (who is a legendary stunt coordinator/second unit director), and if he’ll fight a shark in Meg. But I asked the most important question: why do audiences love watching him beat the shit out of people and then killing them? He gave a great answer.

If you’re not familiar with Mechanic: Resurrection, the sequel to the 2011 action film sees Statham’s returning as Bishop, who’s thrust back into the world of murder and tasked with performing nearly impossible assassinations against his will. The film also stars Jessica Alba as a damsel in distress and a capable action heroine,  and Tommy Lee Jones as a weapons dealer (and he has a lot of fun with it).

Check out what Statham had to say in the video above. You can also watch the Mechanic: Resurrection trailer below.

Here's the official synopsis for Mechanic: Resurrection:

Arthur Bishop [Jason Statham] returns as the Mechanic in the sequel to the 2011 action thriller. When the deceitful actions of a cunning but beautiful woman [Jessica Alba] force him to return to the life he left behind, Bishop’s life is once again in danger as he has to complete an impossible list of assassinations of the most dangerous men in the world.
