Earlier this week, we reported that Joe Wright (Anna Karenina) was in negotiations with Warner Bros. to helm their Peter Pan picture, Pan.  Now, it looks like the studio has offered the lead villain role of Blackbeard the pirate to one Javier Bardem (Skyfall).  The Jason Fuchs script centers on the title orphan who is taken to the magical world of Neverland, where he becomes the savior of the natives and leads a rebellion against the evil pirates, of which Blackbeard is their captain.  If Bardem signs on for the deal, it would put another feather in his villainous cap that includes Skyfall, No Country for Old Men, and The Counselor.  Once the villain is locked, we’ll likely hear more casting news on the protagonist’s side of things.  (Via Deadline)

Maybe they can give him a weird wig, that’s never been done before.

    Great actor, but meh.

Fantastic choice, but I wouldn’t necessarily call his Counselor character a villain. He was certainly as eccentric as Silva was, but he wasn’t evil, Diaz’s Malkina was the closest thing to an antagonist in that.

Fun fact: His wife (Penélope Cruz) played Blackbeard’s daughter in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

    What about Captain Hook ?

Yeah, would think Hook would be the villain. Weird.

I think Hook was part of Blackbeard’s crew, or something of that matter, before he was actually Hook. Captain Hook actually attended college and whatnot, so maybe he’s busy being scholarly at this time.

I love Javier, but this sounds like a “young adult”movie with all the action centered on the adolescent protagonist, and Blackbeard(?) a caricature; I’d rather see him in something else. That being said, he would certainly elevate the movie. I also agree that he wasn’t really a villain in The Counselor.

I can’t believe people haven’t caught on to the fact that Joe Wright is a really good director. The man is one of the most technically skilled, not to mention creative directors in the business. Add Javier Bardem to the mix and the film is definitely a must-see for me.

It’s a shame that Asa Butterfield is already 16 as he would have been phenomenal in the role of “the Orphan” had he been a little younger. That said, this is the director who discovered Saiorse Ronan and cast the little known Benedict Cumberbatch in Atonement, so history bodes well for his casting decisions.
