Universal has released nine new Jem and the Holograms images. The film stars Aubrey Peeples as Jerrica, a shy girl who must take on the musical alter-ego of “Jem” to take care of her family and friends/bandmates, which includes Stefanie Scott as Kimber, Hayley Kiyoko as Aja and Aurora Perrineau as Shana.

Speaking to USA Today, director John M. Chu (G.I. Joe: Retaliation) says this will be the classic seduced-by-fame story and have plenty of 80s nostalgia, but it will also be a “coming-of-age” origin story for the YouTube generation. The film even went so far as to have fans contribute to the movie online with videos of praise and performances that will be used as a “crowdsourced Greek chorus.”

Looking at these images and what Chu is trying to do with the film, Jem and the Holograms could be a cute little picture that may not break the mold, but has polished it up for a new generation in a way that doesn’t feel cynical.

Check out the images below. Jem and the Holograms opens October 23rd, and also stars Molly Ringwald, Ryan Guzman, and Juliette Lewis.
