First Image of Jeremy Renner in THE BOURNE LEGACY [Updated]

     January 5, 2012

The fantastic Bourne series is set to continue later this year without star Matt Damon (and without the character of Jason Bourne) in The Bourne Legacy. Jeremy Renner takes the lead role this time around, and the first image of him in character as “Aaron Cross” has hit the web. The franchise entry isn’t so much a reboot, but a separate story that takes place in the same Bourne universe. Tony Gilroy, who wrote the first three Bourne flicks, is in the director’s chair and Renner is surrounded by an impressive ensemble that includes Rachel Weisz, Oscar Isaac, Joan Allen, Albert Finney, and Edward Norton as the villain. While this first image isn’t exactly the most riveting of stills, it gives us a look at a pretty intense Renner death stare. The pic is one of my most anticipated of the year, and I’m looking forward to seeing how Renner picks up where Damon left off.

Hit the jump to check out the image. The Bourne Legacy opens August 3rd. [Update: We've updated the article with the hi-res version of the image.]

Here’s the official synopsis for The Bourne Legacy:

The narrative architect behind the Bourne film series, Tony Gilroy, takes the helm in the next chapter of the hugely popular espionage franchise that has earned almost $1 billion at the global box office: The Bourne Legacy.  The writer/director expands the Bourne universe created by Robert Ludlum with an original story that introduces us to a new hero (Jeremy Renner) whose life-or-death stakes have been triggered by the events of the first three films.

For The Bourne Legacy, Renner joins fellow series newcomers Rachel Weisz, Edward Norton, Stacy Keach and Oscar Isaac, while franchise veterans Albert Finney, Joan Allen, David Strathairn and Scott Glenn reprise their roles.

I still don’t understand how you can have a Bourne movie without the Jason Bourne character, but I guess I’ll find out this summer.

The cast is very impressive though.

    • Northern Star

Agreed, the only reason this is happening is because Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass aren’t returning for a fourth Bourne installment, and Universal don’t want to let a profitable franchise go, but the cast is excellent, and the movie may be excellent, but I’m much more interested in the upcoming ’24′ movie – at least that will have the main central character in it!

They could have made it like James Bond where the name is just an alias…

      • grittymcgritterson

Yep. or even easier why doesnt he just play BOURNE HIMSELF. I’m sorry, i dont think Matt Damons coming back, he said he felt too old for the role last time anyway? Seriously theyre messing it up.

While not the ideal direction to take the franchise, I see how they can do it. This film can show the repercussions of Bourne’s escape on how Treadstone burns another agent. Damon has stated that he may still return to the franchise. This movie can be about Aaron Cross’s escape from the bureaucratic clutches of Treadstone, so that the next few films, Aaron Cross and Jason Bourne can team up to take them down for good. Just my opinion. Maybe they’ll go a different route.

Great that he looks so different from his character in MI:4

  • Ben

Everything about this film is exciting. I can’t wait. I was really impressed with Renner in M:I4

I have no idea how this guy keeps getting work. His acting is just awful. Anytime he tries to act serious I want to laugh at the screen.

    • aaronsullivan

Disagree completely. This guy got his stardom from a small film that got big play based in large part on his riveting performance. Once I saw him in MI 4, I knew it wasn’t a fluke. He has range and I’m looking forward to all his performances now, myself.

To each his own, though, I guess.

Jeremy Renner is amazing. If you actually took the time to go through his back catalogue you would realize how much of an amazing actor he truly is! And I have been following him right since the start…it’s about time he hit the mainstream!!!

      • Morley

And doh, that comment was meant for guy above you Aaron. :)

Heard this will start filming in Manila next week. It’s all over (our) news.

This will be like Daniel Craig all over again. Decent actor gets much too over-exposed quickly, audiences get confused seeing him in so many similar movies, loses interest even more quickly.

This is probably why Hollywood is incapable of producing actual ‘stars’ anymore – actors who not only carry movies, but generate authentic excitement over their inclusion. Nothing Renner has done so far even hints that he’s capable of generating buzz on his own, despite the fact that he’s a decent actor.

Say what you will about Tom Cruise, but he’s the best-ever example of how you generate excitement over a movie, and not just with the rabid fans who’ll ‘say’ they’ll buy anything, yet never show up when needed.

Renner’s a good actor and deserves better than to have his career prematurely hacked by appearing in EVERY MAJOR FRANCHISE he possibly can. MI4 was great, but again, that was mostly due to Tom Cruise and Brad Bird. Does anyone really think audiences are wild in anticipation to see The Avengers, Borne, Hansel & Gretal, and what else he’s got in the pipes BECAUSE of him? When the box-office fails to generate heat, he’ll be blamed and become toxic – which is really a shame.

I haven’t seen Renner in any of his films yet. Maybe he can pull it off. The reason why there’s no Bourne is in the title of the film. There could be a chameo but I doubt that.
I would love to see Damon (preferably without Greengrass) again as Jason Bourne but I fear his story is already told.
I’ll go watch this, I won’t see it as a “Bourne film” though.

I saw Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol the other day because i had to kill some time and it was the only movie showing that fit my schedule. Tom Cruise was awefull and not fit for a 6th grade play … as usual.

Jeremy Renner on the other hand was really good in it. I am looking forward to seeing more of him.

  • MattC

Anyone who thinks Tom Cruise cannot act is just being petty. People can’t seperate the man from the characters he plays, the fact is Tom Cruise is a very (not amazing) good actor. He really puts a lot into his roles and if you were to watch Magnolia, Born on the 4th of July, etc. you would see how good he actually is. He just often takes roles that don’t require a whole lot of depth.

This image has already been so overused. Jeremy will be great in this film as he is in everything he does, but he needs to avoid doing all these sequels and remakes simply because they’re blockbuster fare. No doubt his agent his pushing him to do unoriginal material.
