Jeremy Renner Set to Topline THE BOURNE LEGACY

Well, it looks like the search is finally over. Universal Pictures has officially offered Jeremy Renner the lead role in Tony Gilroy’s The Bourne Legacy. Deadline confirms what Latino Review reported earlier this month: that Renner will be taking over the franchise that kicked Matt Damon’s career into high-gear. Written and directed by Gilrory, the film will apparently take place in the same universe as Paul Greengrass and Doug Liman’s previous films, but won’t feature Damon’s Jason Bourne character (a fact that doesn’t seem to hinder Universal from strapping the Bourne name on the film). Legacy will further explore the Treadstone and Blackbriar mythos that permeated throughout the previous films, possibly exploring other similar agents and groups.

Universal cast a very wide net in searching for their Legacy star, with basically every fairly well-known male actor between the ages of 18-40 meeting for the role (names included Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Garrett Hedlund, Taylor Kitsch, Josh Hartnett, etc.). Hit the jump for more.

I think Renner is a fine actor, more than proving himself capable of handling heavy material in the past few years, but at 40 he’s certainly not young. Nevertheless, we know next to nothing in the way of plot details, and Gilroy and Co. seem to think they’ve found their man, so it’s a bit soon to rightly pass judgment.

Damon is still hopeful that he and Greengrass can reunite in the future for another go-around with the original Bourne, and previously stated that as long as Gilroy’s flick gives them room to come back, he’s thrilled. this was a studio choice not a gilroy choice
according to Latino review Oscar Isaac was tony’s choice but universal was’nt having any of that and they wanted a name

First time I’ve heard about Oscar Isaac being considered by Gilroy, but Renner’s body of work speaks for itself (including his role as Jason Walsh in the short lived Unusuals for NBC). I think he’ll be great and hope they take this Bourne is a more hard hitting direction.

Does no one find it odd that he will be in two of the major “spy” franchises? I mean with Mission Impossible and now Bourne all he is lacking is a run at the Bond movies.

Aren’t they concerned with the fact that Paramount has also set him up as the character “supposedly” taking over for Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt in the new Mission Impossible film coming out this December? It’s strange to have the same actor headling two major spy genre franchises.

Jonathan Rhys Meyer was supposed take over for cruise after mi3 also and that didn’t happen-

my guess is that the “taking over” is just a ploy cruise uses to get another one of these made since they won’t let him make one under his own star power anymore-

As much as I love Jeremy Renner, I don’t think he should be Bourne. He’s already in Mission: Impossible, starring in The Avengers, one franchise too many. The studio should definitely consider Oscar Isaac. Just because Sucker Punch flopped dosen’t mean that none of the actors shouldn’t be getting any jobs, especially since Isaac was one of the best performances in the film (not to mention Robin Hood, which, guess what, was distributed by Universal).

I didn’t really like any of the names being thrown around for this until I heard Joel Edgerton being a possibility. He would have been absolutely perfect. What a shame.

I wonder why they didn’t persist with Matt Damon. He seems the best choice still.

They’re not replacing Damon. His character isn’t in this movie. Damon won’t do another Bourne film without Paul Greengrass, so they’re going a different direction entirely. I still don’t think this movie should have Bourne in the title, but thats just my opinion.

I’d much rather have Bradley Cooper. :)

    “Beefeater.” I LOVE it.

He was a very good actor in the town but to win the oscar…hmm not sure. It’s late and I don’t feel like thinking of examples of others from this past year but nominated I could definitely see.

Finally, we can see a non-shaky camera Bourne movie since the 1st one n i hav faith in Gilroy will handle this well. Besides, Gilroy cn cast actors he wanted to cast for the lead role for other roles :D

There’s no need to worry ab Renner’s acting since he has nominated oscars twice. I believe he’ll portray an assassin tat is as awesome as Damon n definitely looking forward to see him in Mi4….
