It’s not only an honor just to be nominated for an Academy Award; it’s a major career boost. Jeremy Renner, who received a nomination for Best Actor, is now receiving–like most first-time nominees in the major categories–a slew of offers. The New York Times reports that Renner’s next project will be director James McTeigue’s (V for Vendetta) indie period piece/thriller Raven with Ewan McGregor in talks to co-star. The film is based on Edgar Allen Poe’s famous poem, but set in 1850′s Baltimore with a serial killer whose crimes mirror Poe’s work. He spoke about the project in greater depth when Steve interviewed him back in November.
But the bigger news is that two blockbuster projects, both of which are set to shoot this summer, are competing to get the actor. First, there’s Peter Berg’s Battleship, based on the board game but told as a naval-warfare story against aliens. Then there’s a “secret project” where Renner has had five meetings to discuss playing the role, but he declined to say what it was. That “secret project” has to be something massive if it’s enough to make Renner think twice about starring in a movie as big as Battleship.

Can anyone else see Renner as a hobbit? Secret project indeed.
My money is going with Captain America. We should know by March 1st
Hmmm…The Hobbit? Never really considered that but it could work. Although as a BIG fan of the HURT LOCKER and a DIE HARD captain america geek I hope that the cap movie is the secret project. I'm really pulling for this guy as cap and aside from Jeff Bridges I think Renner is a lock for best actor and think he could bring quite a bit to Steve Rogers.
Wow, the Raven is my favorite poem by Edgar Allen Poe and I have everything he's ever written. Absolutely my favorite poet/short story writer. I can't wait to see that movie.
Please let the secret have something to do with Cloverfield….
What about The Riddler in Nolan's third Batman?
Because a fresh academy award nominee is really going to star in a 2-bit Cloverfield sequel. Plus, isn't that director working on Let Me In? aka… major-fail project.
Could it be Captain America….?
Could it be Captain America….?
Because it would take so much for someone to think twice about starring in a board game adaptation.
…could THE AVENGERS be ramping up to shoot scenes as early as this summer? This guy is known to be of interest to Marvel to play Hawkeye, maybe they are going to start production this summer. How many projects could there be that would have enough of a career payoff for an actor of Renner's strata to beg off a lead in a tentpole like BATTLESHIP?, and what else could loom so close yet be part of such a precision marketing plan that they would begin filming so soon and yet still not have announced cast?
