The geek worlds are imploding, and in the best way! A time lord is headed to the Marvel universe for their original Netflix series A.K.A Jessica Jones. The series stars Krysten Ritter as the titular ex-superhero who attempts to move on with her life as a private detective after a tragic event cuts her crime-fighting days short. Marvel announced today that David Tennant will join the cast of Jessica Jones as Kilgrave, an enigmatic figure from Jessica’s past. While we don’t know how close the series will stick to the source material, in the comics Kilgrave (known as “the purple man”) has the power to control people’s minds via pheromones, recovers quickly from injury, and is literally the color purple.
The beloved Doctor Who alum, who was most recently seen in the crime drama Broadchurch and the American remake Gracepoint, joins Ritter and Mike Colter, who plays Jessica’s husband Luke Cage, in the second of Marvel’s 13-episode order series with Netflix. Jessica Jones is set to arrive at some point in 2015 following the release of Daredevil, which arrives on Netflix April 15th.
While Tennant is best known as the heroic tenth Doctor on Doctor Who, fans will also remember him as the extremely creepy Barty Crouch Jr. in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Marvel’s Head of Television Jeph Loeb said of Tennant’s casting:
Anyone familiar with David’s work knows he brings an incredible level of dedication to any role he inhabits, a level we knew we would need from the man playing Kilgrave. While most know him for his roles as a hero, we can’t wait to unleash a whole new side of this talented actor.
Here’s the official series description:
