The Marvel Netflix series Jessica Jones is not only one of Netflix’s best original series, nor just one of Marvel’s best TV ventures—it was one of the best TV shows of 2015. Showrunner Melissa Rosenberg crafted this ground-level superhero story with a tremendous focus on emotion and character, essentially framing the show’s entire first season as a sexual assault survivor story. And this was all brought to life via Krysten Ritter’s phenomenally dynamic and complex performance, giving us one of the most fascinating Marvel characters yet, small screen or large.

So it’s with a serious degree of anticipation that we await Jessica Jones Season 2. Netflix quickly ordered another season of the show after the first was met with universal critical acclaim, but the precise timing of the new season is complicated by Marvel TV’s ambitious plans. Before jumping back into Jessica Jones, Ritter has to report for duty for the team-up series The Defenders, which finds the individual heroes of Jessica Jones, Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist coming together Avengers-style to defeat some larger threat.

So what, exactly, will Jessica Jones Season 2 entail? Speaking with Digital Spy, Ritter teased the various possibilities:

"I'm excited to see what happens next for Jessica, and the end of season one left a lot of doors open and questions unanswered. Kilgrave was her reason for getting up every morning. Saving people gave her purpose. I wonder how emotionally taxed she's going to be now. That opens a lot of doors as to who will come out and play. We all live in the same universe, so there are endless possibilities."

However, it may be some time before we see the story continue, as Ritter revealed that she’ll be shooting the new season of Jessica Jones directly after The Defenders:

"They'll be back-to-back. I don't know if they'll overlap a little bit. It’s about to be a serious undertaking. I’m starting my physical training—lots of weight training and boxing.”

The Defenders is poised to start filming later this year as Marvel TV has set Daredevil showrunners Douglas Petrie and Marco Ramirez to serve as showrunners for the team-up series. Iron Fist is currently filming its first season with Finn Jones in the lead, while Luke Cage’s first season will debut on Netflix later this year. The Defenders won’t premiere until 2017, after Iron Fist, but it sounds like Ritter’s going to be mighty busy.

But given that Jones and Mike Colter’s Luke Cage has a significant relationship on Jessica Jones, it’s possible we could see Ritter onscreen once again in the Luke Cage series. She remained mum on confirmation, but did tease a different tone for the Colter-led show:

"Marvel have this grand plan. Luke Cage will come out, then Iron Fist. In terms of scheduling I don't know how it will all come out and I can't even tell you if I've filmed Luke Cage. But I'm excited for Mike to have his own show. I know the tone of that show is going to be very different.”

Ritter also revealed that certain aspects of Luke Cage’s backstory were off limits for Jessica Jones so they could be saved for Luke Cage, so expect plenty of revelations.

As a huge fan of Jones and both Ritter and Colter’s performances, I’m excited to see their dynamic continue as the Marvel TV universe proceeds. And while Jessica Jones Season 2 may not debut until 2018 or so, at least we'll get to see Ritter’s fantastic iteration of the character before then.
