The casting process on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy continues to move right along, and even though the studio has yet to announce any actors joining the project, they are reportedly looking at some rather interesting names to fill out the cast.  We’ve previously reported on a number of shortlists of actors that Marvel and director James Gunn have been considering for the lead role of Star-Lord, a master strategist and combat expert who wears an ability-enhancing suit and pilots a psychically-linked ship.  Everyone from John Krasinski to Jim Sturgess has been linked to the role, and now a couple more young male actor names have been added to the list of contenders.

More interestingly, though, is the fact that Marvel is apparently looking into nabbing a couple of high profile comedic actors to bring some levity to the film: Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler.

jim-carrey-guardians-of-the-galaxyThe folks over at Latino Review, who have been a solid source on Marvel news for the past couple of years now, report that Marvel is currently looking into the availability of both Carrey and Sandler.  The report is unclear as to whether the studio is casting two comedic roles or just one, and it’s important to note that looking into the availability of an actor is not the same thing as casting the actor.  That said, we all knew Guardians was likely to be a humor-filled movie the minute Gunn signed on, and Carrey and/or Sandler would certainly fit into the likely motion-capture roles of Rocket Raccoon (a talking raccoon) and Groot (a giant tree).  Carrey recently proved that he’s not averse to superhero properties, as he will appear this summer in the sequel Kick-Ass 2.

In addition to the Carrey/Sandler news, the site also reports that Wes Bentley, Chris Lowell (The Help, Veronica Mars), and Cam Gigandet (Twilight) are the latest crop of actors being asked to read for the role of Star-Lord.  Again, reading for a role is not the same thing as receiving an offer, but it’s clear that Marvel is casting a very wide net in filling this part.  Hopefully we hear more solid news soon as the film gears up to begin production later this summer in London.  Guardians of the Galaxy will be released in 3D on August 1, 2014.

  1. I think jim carrey has a super expressive face that would be great motion captured for groot
he did a great mocap job on christmas carol

  2. i’m on the Krasinski bandwagon. He’s just an incredibly likable guy who’s also very talented. I remember when his name came up for Cap i thought that was a great choice

    • Totally agree. I was kinda sad he didnt get to do cap but evans did great. Hope krasinski enters the marvel universe in some fashion

  3. I still can’t believe this has actually been given the green light. Is there enough call for this? It’s the reason they have never greenlit a Silver Surfer movie as not enough people are familiar with the character.

    • You’re right, I remember that Marvel guy squirming his way through an interview telling people how Black Panther would be too unrelatable – but then Marvel greenlight a movie about a talking tree and a raccoon??

  4. “Carrey recently proved that he’s not averse to superhero properties, as he will appear this summer in the sequel Kick-Ass 2.”

He was also in a small indie film in 1995 called BATMAN FOREVER. Before that he had just a bit of minor success with another comic book property, THE MASK.

    • Glad someone else remembered that he’s done comic book movies before. Sorry Collider but you guys are better than that.

    • What they were referencing was just the fact that he spoke out about doing another superhero film after his poor experience on Batman. It was also during the interview that he spoke about his disdain on doing sequels of his own make. So him doing a superhero film again is weird.

  5. Jim Carrey would be great! I might ctually go see this film knowing he’s in it, as I know nothing about its source, and none of the marketing has got me interested. However, Sandlers name kinda undoes my enthusiasm all over again.

    • I think Michael Rooker would be GREAT for Rocket Raccoon. It would be unexpected and badass. It would make him more likable than if he had a high pitched voice, or a smooth voice like Carrey’s. I totally agree with you.

  6. You want a high profile comedy guy, then go after Seth Macfarlane for Rocket Raccoon. I guess I don’t mind Jim Carrey that much but please, please no to Adam Sandler. Keep him a away!!!

  7. It’s this simple….

    Star-Lord: Joel Edgerton
    Drax: Vin Diesel
    Rocket Raccoon: Seth Macfarlane
    Gamora: Gina Carano
Groot: Be creative…..get someone with a deep, or strong voice. I mean he only says three words the whole time…

    • If they could pull off James Earl Jones for Groot I would be sooooooooooooooo happy. As for Sandler I think they only way it could work is if he did Rocket Raccoon and put some originality into his voice like he did in Hotel Transelvania. He can pull off a good voice as long as the writing is good, and I trust James Gunn

  8. I love that they said Kick Ass 2 shows Jim Carrey’s willingness to be in a super hero film… I guess Batman Forever and The Mask were just not comic-booky enough?

  9. If they were just voicing Rocket Racoon I guess would be fine but if they’re up for star lord then this is an awful idea…
