Jimmy Fallon in Talks to Host the Oscars

     August 3, 2012

Summer is finally, hopefully winding down to a close, and it’s time to start talking about Oscar yet again.  Though we’ve likely only seen a couple of possible contenders for the 85th Academy Awards thus far, the Academy is busy with their first priority: sorting out who will host the ceremony.  According to the LA Times, Jimmy Fallon is in talks to host this year’s Oscars, but there may be a bit of a hiccup.  The Academy president is keen on the idea of Fallon hosting, but ABC—who broadcasts the show—apparently has some reservations.  They’re not high on showcasing Fallon, since the late night talk show host competes with ABC’s Jimmy Kimmell for viewers.  Hit the jump for more.

oscars-jimmy-fallonAs a deal sweetener, should Fallon sign the deal to host the Oscars, Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels would produce the show.  I know some people find Fallon too “nice” for their taste, but I think the guy is genuinely funny.  Just because he lacks cynicism doesn’t mean he wouldn’t make an entertaining Oscar host.  He fronted the 2010 Primetime Emmy Awards to great success, with a memorably swell opening that included the likes of Fallon, Jon Hamm, and Tina Fey singing Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run.”

Many criticized Billy Crystal as host last year for being too “old-fashioned” and bland, and I imagine those detractors wouldn’t be thrilled with Fallon as this year’s choice.  Per the LA Times, a deal has yet to be officially closed.  The Academy president traditionally selects the show’s host, and ABC is said to not have veto power over his decision.  It’s early days, but I think Fallon would make a fine choice for Oscar host; especially if he brought along The Roots.  What say you, readers?  Would Fallon make a good Oscar host or do you have someone else in mind?

His show used to be terrible, but now it’s easily the best late show there is. Great choice!

I like Jimmy, he somehow is able to get celebrities to do things they wouldn’t usually. As long as he got to pick the writers, bc bad writing would defeat the point of getting a good host.

If you want someone laughing at there own jokes the whole time, then Fallon’s a great host. I think a combination of Colbert, Stewart, and Carell would be awesome. If you let one of them lead, and the other two support. Anytime those three are at an awards show it’s hilarious.

Get over it ABC! Jimmy Fallon is better than ‘Wooden Face’ Jimmy Kimmel.

Oh please, no… Get someone with some actual showmanship to host.

Id love that. I think Fallon is hilarious. I think his care-free style would really help the show. Also, I think they should stop trying to impress everyone. People who watch the Oscars are going to watch. Don’t over think it, Academy.
