The rumor mill suggests that J.J. Abrams is planning a collaboration with Korean director Bong Joon-ho, the creative mind behind the 2007 creature feature The Host and the recent drama Mother/Film hears that Abrams met extensively with Bong during a trip to South Korea last year, where the pair discussed a project that has so far been kept under wraps.  According to the source, Abrams will produce, Bong will direct, and Hollywood will serve as production headquarters.  It is not specified whether or not this would be Bong’s first English-language film, though it would be the first he made in the U.S.  More after the jump:

movie_poster_mother_bong_joon_ho_01Financially speaking, The Host functions as Bong’s calling card both domestically and abroad, while Mother furthered his stature in the critical community earlier this year.  The potential of Abrams and Bong becoming “Abrams & Bong” is sure to whet the appetite of film geeks everywhere — given Abrams’ demonstrated fondness for both developing projects in relative secrecy and producing Host-ian monster films, the rumor seems reasonable enough.  I say go ahead and let your appetite be whet.

Bong’s next film is Snow Piercer, an adaptation of the French comic book Le Transperceneige.  Here’s a brief synopsis:

Snow Piercer takes place in an apocalyptic world covered by ice and snow.  A group of survivors end up on a train, and eventually fracture according to social class as they struggle and fight with one another.  Ultimately, it’s about human nature under extreme circumstances.

Bong is an amazing director – the fact that Hollywood hasn't come calling up to this point is really surprising. The Host is the film for which he is best known over here (and it is excellent) but I think his masterpiece so far is Memories of Murder – if you haven't seen it, do so. (It would be great to see Kang Ho Sung get some recognition in the west as well – a great actor.)

I thought the Host was decent: great cinematography and monster design but I hardly consider it the “masterpiece” that all the South Korean plants hyped it as. That said, my memory of the few english characters in that flick does not exactly raise my confidence that Bong can direct an english-language film. Here's to hoping though… a Cloverfield sequel would be awesome.
