In what is probably one of the most non-surprising news bits in recent history, J.J. Abrams has officially committed to directing Star Trek 2. It’s been widely assumed for some time that Abrams would return to helm the sequel to his 2009 blockbuster. However, several delays eventually led Paramount to replace Star Trek 2 with G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation in its June 29th, 2012 release slot and the director told us back in August that he wouldn’t officially sign on until “everything was in place.”
Apparently, that time has come as Vulture reports that said delays are now a thing of the past now that co-writer Alex Kurtman has completed work on his directorial debut, DreamWorks’ Welcome to People. Per the report, Abrams and co. are now ready to focus on Trek 2 and are looking to begin shooting the much-anticipated pic this winter. Now that everything is “official,” Trek fans can finally get back to worrying less about who will direct and more about how they’ll be able to cope with “Average Joe Off the Street” enjoying their beloved franchise.

I presume by this winter they mean probably January or February, given the time to design and build sets, scout filming locations, etc. I guess this means the movie will be a June 2013 release now, which is a pretty decent schedule to get everything done right…
Star Trek was a perfect movie. no serious. it was perfect
it was a good movie but far from perfect in my opinion. hoping this one will be an improvement over the last.
Definitely not perfect, the ‘bad guy’ was laughable and so where his motivations, really stupid!!!! BUT I enjoyed the pace of the movie, the cast, the effects and overall it was enjoyable if ‘lite’ I have a hard time watching it again as its so simplistic plot wise
• The Orion Syndicate as the villains
• Larger all-star cast as well as many cameos including by William Shatner
• More planets
• Larger space battles with more starships
• Kirk having better fighting skills
• Kirk having several human love interests played by Hollywood’s most beautiful young actresses
• No cut scenes
• The Star Trek theme music from the Insurrection end credits used at the end
I hope they include Lady Gaga in the sequel as a singer with dark connections to the villains. With her futuristic music and style, she would fit right in.
I’d like to see Kirk, Spock and McCoy go undercover to a concert of hers on a distant planet like with Diva Plavalaguna in The Fifth Element (1997). When she sings Bad Romance, Paparazzi, Poker Face or Just Dance, her show could be raided by many henchmen who have a thunderous phaser fight with Kirk, Spock and McCoy like the intense post-bank heist gunfight in Heat (1995).
